How Do You Define Sport?... - PakPassion - Pakistan Cricket Forum

Good thread, was thinking the same myself.

It doesn't have to be a team event, this we can rule out. Boxing is the ultimate sport imo, one of the reasons being nobody else can come to your rescue unless the corner throws in the towel but this isn't allowed in certain contests. I'm not really a fan of the judging but the actual performance of the athletes and everything it involves from fitness to mental strength cannot be matched imo.

Anything involving an animal I don't consider a sport as the animal usually is the main factor but never given the right respect or dues.

Anything which requires no decent level of physical fitness isn't a sport. Darts, Snooker, Shooting, Archery, etc. In Darts and Snooker we had players who used to drink beer and smoke fags while the match was in progress. The most famous being Alex Higgins in Snooker and Jocky Wilson in Darts.

The other factor is the competition has to clearly defined. ie, in Football the team who scores the most goals wins or in boxing a knock-out will get you the win. This rules out stuff like dance, it's opinion based. Gymnastics is a tough one but I'd go with it as a sport as the performance can be judged from clear enough points.

The other problem I have with some sports is the many variations and nothing annoys me more than swimming. No doubt it's a sport but why have so many different ways of swimming? As I wrote in another thread what if running had variations, it would be a farce.
