Continuing our path of Tech Savviness with Google Plus | Saint ...

Continuing our path of Tech Savviness with Google Plus

The latest thing we have been learning about and experimenting with here at Hermann London is google plus. It seems like it is a mix between facebook, gotomeeting, google local, twitter, evite, etc all in one.

So we started by creating personal pages, which was easy. Then adding all of the people we know into different circles. The point of the different circles is that if I wanted only my ?friends? to see an update about the killer weekend I had, its possible to only share that with the people in my friend circle. If we wanted to post about the newest real estate technology we have been using, we would share that with only the people in our ?real estate? circle. Etc. Now that we have a personal page, we are moving on to creating a company page. Tying it in with our google local account that we have been using for years, and making our company have a presence on google plus. We can also make our companies website link to google plus as well, through something like this: Find us on Google+
Next we started discovering the options of the google hangout. Its more than just a video chat, its actually a group video chat, a screen share, and much more. We have been experimenting with ?hanging out? with people from across the country and world who are all also still learning about the hangouts. There are already websites out there listing different hangouts and it looks like you can join hangouts across the world covering different topics. We will be taking part in a hangout today that is made up of Realtors from across the country that work with veterans and VA loans. We will be sharing with each other the different technologies and tools we use to get business done.
We occasionally work with clients who are unable to travel to St. Louis regularly to view properties. That makes selecting a property a challenge for the buyer, but it also makes us a little uncomfortable, because when we help someone buy a house we really want to make sure it?s the right house for them. Google hangouts will allow us to walk through the home and really do a ?virtual open house? in a lot of ways. It will allow us to meet with our agents who live farther away from our office and don?t want to make the drive in just for a few minutes of personal time. We are looking forward to continued learning about google plus and all that it offers. If you are a realtor, buyer, or seller and you want to integrate technology into your real estate process, I think Hermann London agents are a great resource for you. Lets ?hangout? today.

Michigan Humanities Council Awarded Two Grants Totaling $110000

LANSING? The Michigan Humanities Council has been awarded two grants totaling $110,000 from the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs (MCACA). The grant funds will be used to support two programs produced in partnership between the councils ? the Arts & Humanities Touring Program and Poetry Out Loud.

?The Michigan Humanities Council and Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs enjoy a unique partnership,? said Robbe DiPietro, acting executive director for the Humanities Council. ?Our cooperation has enabled us to provide two powerful programs, reaching communities throughout the state and integrating arts and humanities into our culture and livelihood.

?The Humanities Council has been working diligently to increase the number of high school students participating in Poetry Out Loud and to bring more quality performing arts to schools, libraries and festivals across the state. With critical funding from MCACA and individual donors, corporations and foundations, we are ensuring that more Michigan children and adults have an opportunity to experience and benefit from humanities programs.?

The first grant, totaling $60,000, will be re-granted for the Arts & Humanities Touring Program. The program, which features a juried directory of Michigan?s top arts and humanities performers, awards grants to nonprofit organizations in order to offset the cost of bringing these performers into their communities.

The second grant, totaling $50,000, will be split between administrative and directory costs of the Touring program, and implementation of Poetry Out Loud. Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation competition for high school students. Each participating school hosts a competition and sends their winner to the statewide competition. The state champion receives an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the national championship in Washington, D.C., and the chance to win a $20,000 college scholarship.

This grant award by the MCACA is a portion of $6.1 million the organization will distribute in 2013 to art agencies with regional, state and local missions.

Uruguay poised to legalize abortion

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) ? Uruguay's congress appeared ready on Tuesday to legalize abortion, a groundbreaking move in Latin America, where no country save Cuba has made abortions accessible to all women during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Compromises made to secure votes disappointed both sides of the abortion divide, which gathered in protest. Once it gets through Uruguay's lower house, the measure would go back to the Senate for approval of changes, but President Jose Mujica has said he will allow it to become law.

The measure would give women the right to a legal abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and decriminalize later-term abortions when the mother's life is at risk or when the fetus is so deformed that it wouldn't survive after birth. In cases of rape, abortions would be legal during the first 14 weeks.

The goal is to reduce the number of illegal abortions in Uruguay, Congressman Ivan Posada of the center-left Independent Party told his fellow lawmakers Tuesday. Posada wrote the measure and is expected to provide a key 50th vote against the opposition of 49 other lawmakers.

"They talk of 30,000 a year, a hypothetical number, but whatever the number is, it's quite dramatic for a country where 47,000 children are born each year," Posada explained earlier in an Associated Press interview.

A poll this month showed 52 percent of Uruguayans would vote to legalize abortion if the question were put to the people, while 34 percent would vote against it. The survey of 802 people nationwide by the CIFRA consulting firm had a 3.4 percentage point margin of error.

Compromises include requiring women seeking abortions to justify their request before a panel of at least three professionals ? a gynecologist, psychologist and social worker ? and listen to advice about alternatives including adoption and support services if should she decide to keep the baby.

Then, she must wait five more days "to reflect" on the consequences before the procedure.

"It's important that the woman who decides to have an abortion attend this meeting where she will be informed, where they'll explain all the options including alternatives that she is free to choose from," Posada told the AP.

The review panel should obtain the father's point of view, but only if the woman agrees. Women under 18 must show parental consent, but they can seek approval from a judge instead if they're unwilling or unable to involve their parents in the decision.

The measure also allows entire private health care institutions, as well as individual health care providers, to decline to perform abortions.

Such requirements raised objections from Amnesty International and other groups, which say layers of bureaucracy will create barriers and delay abortions until more than 12 weeks have passed, thus forcing women and health care providers into criminal territory.

"This is not the law for which we fought for more than 25 years," complained Marta Agunin, who directs Women and Health, a non-governmental organization in Uruguay.

Also opposed are Uruguay's Catholic and evangelical institutions, which along with public hospitals provide much of the available health care in Uruguay.

A statement from Uruguay's Catholic University says it makes no sense to punish a woman for killing a fetus that is 12 weeks and 1 day old, but to decriminalize abortions before then. Conservatives also object to the removal of a proposal to require the father's consent before any abortion.

Cuba, which decriminalizes abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, is the only country in Latin America where legal abortion is common. Argentina and Colombia allow it only in cases of rape or when the mother's life is endangered. Colombia also allows it when there is proof of fetal malformation. Mexico City has legalized first-trimester abortions, but there are restrictions in most other parts of the country.

Many countries ban abortions under any conditions.

Uruguay's lawmakers have no desire to make their country a destination for women from other countries seeking abortions. The measure says only Uruguayan citizens and women who can prove at least one year's residency can apply. "This is a solution for those who live here, not that Uruguay becomes a place that attracts people from other countries for this procedure," Posada told the AP.

Opposition Deputy Javier Garcia of the center-right National Party accused lawmakers of treating living embryos as if they were "disposable," which he equated with murder.

The margin for the law was razor-thin on Tuesday after Deputy Andres Lima of the ruling Broad Front coalition said he would refuse to vote. With Posada joining the coalition, the measure appeared headed for passage by a 50-49 vote margin.

Dr. Marie Gonzalez, bioethicist at the University of the Republic, called the measure "evil" and vowed to work to persuade her fellow gynecologists to refuse to perform the procedure if it becomes law.

"The embryo-fetus is a human being, and as such has rights, like the human right to live," she said.

importance of fruits | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

Fruits are a delight to the human senses. Fruits are the most attractive, delicious, and nutritious of all foods available. Decorating a fruit tray may sound interesting but it can be a real hassle if you aren?t aware of the different fruit types. The importance of fruits in your diet can be attributed to the fact that they contain many vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are necessary for optimum digestion.

Fruits are the best source of natural sugar and are packed with anti-oxidants. They are high in fiber and low in calories. Fruits are also low in sodium so they help reduce the chance of gaining weight due to fluid retention. Protection from illnesses is yet another benefit we gain from consuming fruit.

Fruits also protect your body from cancer-causing free radicals and slow down the effects of aging.

Fruits are at their best when eaten in the raw and ripe state. A fruit platter is a lovely addition to any gathering. A large dish decorated with various fresh fruits arranged in a pattern can be extremely delicious and appetizing. All fruits should have their individual places in the platter so that it gains a uniform appearance.

Here are a few fruit platter ideas which may be of use to you:

For a perfect fruit platter you must add a variety of fruits with different colors and textures.
Be careful with fragile fruits such as berries which get crushed easily.

Place them on the top of the bowl as garnishing.

The key to create a good looking fruit platter is to cut and slice your fruits into similar sized and shaped pieces.
You must ensure that you choose your fruits well. Shop for bright colored fruits with different textures in order to add variety to the platter.

It is very important that all the fruits are washed well and dried.

A fruit platter looks even better when you make two sections of fruits. One section can have whole fruits such as grapes, cherries, and berries and the other section can have sliced fruits which include apples, bananas, and oranges.
You can also slice melons and pineapples so they are displayed in their rinds.

The role of genetics in leadership ? Business Management Daily ...

In a new examination of twin studies, Scott Shane, management professor at Case Western Reserve University, reveals a growing consensus that genes really do account for many of the differences between individuals?in business as well as the rest of life.

Born Entrepreneurs, Born Leaders: How Your Genes Affect Your Work Life, observes how genetics influences which jobs people choose, how important work is to them, and how they perform. Also, about 40% of the variation between people?s incomes is attributable to genetics.

Richard Arvey, head of business management and organization at the National University of Singapore, has been studying how genes interact with environmental factors to form such characteristics as entrepreneurial zeal and the ability to lead.

One interesting finding: Genes help explain extroversion only in women. In men, the trait comes from the environment. Businesswomen, apparently, are born, while businessmen are made.

Also, says Arvey, inborn leadership traits do exist, but upbringing counts, too. The influence of genes on leadership potential is weakest in boys raised in wealthy, supportive families and strongest in children brought up under harsher circumstances.

Economists' surprising election-year request: Raise taxes, please!

In a survey of economists who work mostly for banks and businesses, a majority said some additional tax revenue is needed, along with spending cuts, to reduce the federal budget deficit.

Economists who work for the nation's businesses have a request that sounds off-key in a US election year: Taxes should go higher.

They aren't asking Congress to raise taxes right away, but their argument in a newly released survey is that federal deficits need to be controlled, and that more revenue is part of the answer.

"The vast majority of survey respondents favors some combination of higher taxes and reduced spending to reduce the federal budget deficit," says a report from the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), which conducted the survey in August.

Even President Obama, while calling for higher taxes on high-income Americans, doesn't couch his argument in rhetoric saying "I like higher taxes." He explains that he's been a tax cutter in his first term, but that the richest Americans need to chip in more in tough times.

In the survey of 236 economists, who work mostly for banks and businesses, only one-third said that fiscal policy should be "tightened," as would occur with tax hikes, over the next year. But a majority said policy should become tighter starting in 2014.

When asked "How Should Congress Reduce the Federal Budget Deficit?," participants were asked to pick from among five fiscal policy options. The most common response was "equally with spending cuts and tax increases" (selected by 45 percent), followed by "mostly with spending cuts" (31 percent), "mostly with tax increases" (14 percent), "only with spending cuts (9 percent), and "only with tax increases (1 percent).

On its face, the survey appears to show more support for Obama-style policies than for those advocated by the president's Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. President Obama, after all, has consistently and loudly called for a "balanced" approach that includes both spending cuts and tax hikes.

The survey found 90 percent of respondents supporting some blend of those two methods of reducing deficits, while Romney's espousal of "revenue neutral" tax reform lines up most closely with the 9 percent of economists in the survey who called for "spending cuts only."

At the same time, it's important not to interpret the survey too strongly as an endorsement for Obama from the economics profession.

The results do show a clear skepticism for the no-new-taxes appeal that has become a hallmark of Republican fiscal policy. But they also show a strong tilt toward spending discipline ? a bigger emphasis for Romney than for Obama ? with 40 percent of those surveyed in either the "mostly spending cuts" or "only spending cuts" camps. By contrast, only 15 percent favored mostly or only tax increases.

Survey participants weren't asked whether they would side with a particular political party, candidate, or policy proposal. Both parties have some history of failure when it comes to curbing federal deficits.

Many budget-policy experts are skeptical of whether Republicans, if holding the levers of both Congress and the White House, could really reduce federal spending to 20 percent of gross domestic product, as Romney has called for.

Similarly, on the Democratic side, Obama's tax-increase proposals are arguably more tangible than his spending-cut plans. Journalists at the fact-checking website Politifact assessed Obama's claim to have a plan to "cut our deficits by $4 trillion" during the next decade. Their analysis cited some $1.7 trillion in proposed revenue increases, alongside spending plans that rely heavily on automatic spending cuts in a 2011 law ? a law that is widely viewed as a place holder rather than a long-term plan on spending.

The reluctance among economists to impose budget discipline in 2013 highlights another side of America's dilemma over government: What to do about the so-called "fiscal cliff."

At the end of the year, a large volume of tax cuts are scheduled to expire even as automatic spending cuts kick in. Economists, including those in the survey, worry that such sudden tightening of fiscal policy could cause a recession next year. "A majority of respondents would prefer that both monetary and fiscal policies become more stimulative or remain unchanged in 2013," says the NABE report summarizing the survey.

Do You Consider A Slap Domestic Violence? | The Yolanda Adams ...

The other day I did my normal web browsing to catch up on the latest celeb gossip. I saw an interview with Ariane from ?Love and Hip Hop Atlanta? did with Power 105.1?s morning show, ?The Breakfast Club.? I don?t know much about her, but from the little I gathered via the show, she seemed like a cool chick and loyal friend. She constantly told her BFF Mimi Faust?who was in a one-sided relationship with former producer Stevie J (*shivers*)?how beautiful she was and how she deserved more. I credited Ariane as being one of the few with sense?until I saw this interview.

Get Breaking News On Your Phone?Text ?Yolanda? To 23092

The hosts?DJ Envy, Charlamagne tha God and Angela Yee asked about her thoughts on the whole K. Michelle/Memphitz debacle and she went on to explain how she was friends with both parties and couldn?t legitimately form an opinion because she wasn?t there at the time of the incident. Cool, I get that. What blew me completely off guard, though, was when she very matter-of-factly responded, ?Absolutely!? the unfiltered controversy-fiend Charlamagne said, ?She might have did something to get beat up.?

Wait! What? To justify her statement, she then said, ?I?m not saying that women should be hit, but sometimes b*tches need to be slapped.? Very nonchalantly, she admitted to being slapped before. When asked what she?d done to get slapped?assuming there?s actually a good enough reason?she replied, ?You know, my mouth is kind of reckless sometimes.? Another enthusiastic and assured ?absolutely!? followed when she was asked if she felt as though she deserved it. In utter shock, I watched the rest of the interview but couldn?t really digest it because I was still trying to swallow her thoughts regarding domestic violence.

Did you see the interview? Watch it below. Skip to about the 10:40 mark for Ariane?s opinion on domestic abuse in regards to K. Michelle and Memphitz.

I get that there are some crazy, ruthless ladies and gents out here, but unless you are put in a life or death situation and forced to defend yourself for survival, there?s never an acceptable reason to physically harm another human being?regardless of gender. ??My mouth is kind of reckless sometimes? is certainly not grounds for ?b*tches needing to be slapped!?

Though Ariane?s thinking disturbs me, I accept the fact that she?s a grown woman and entitled to her own views?regardless of how outrageous I think they are. What stirs me up though is that she so comfortably and immaturely voiced them on the #1 urban radio morning show in the country. I?m support people verbalizing their thoughts, but some things are just better left unsaid.

Reality stars are like the new celebrity (I know, I know. It pains me to admit too). Though not a household name, Ariane has nearly 50,000 Twitter followers as of now so it?s safe to assume that she has solid, little fan base going on. With so many impressionable youngsters glorifying the life of reality TV stars, sending the message that it?s ?okay? if a person physically violates them is irresponsible and dangerous.

In a society that already negates the severity of domestic violence, such a comment only perpetuates our insensitivity regarding the social ill. ?Every nine seconds in the U.S., a woman is assaulted or beaten? and ?every day in the U.S., more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends,? according to Domestic Violence Statistics. Domestic violence generally happens in stages: Verbal, next a push or shove, then a ?needed? slap or punch, a few broken bones and bruises and eventually death is the final step.

Ariane ended the interview saying that she?d have a larger role on the second season of ?LAHH ATL.? Hopefully she won?t use her new platform to spread more ignorant and regressive views. If so, we all need to be concerned.

What are your thoughts on Ariane?s comments? Do women sometimes just ?need to be slapped??

Aileen Suzara Cracks Open Filipino Cuisine in Coconut Cooking ...

Aileen Suzara

Coconut is the new pomegranate. Touted for its health benefits, it?s popping up everywhere. Electrolyte-rich coconut water has replaced Gatorade as the new sports drink and claims abound that coconut oil boosts the immune system, thyroid and heart. But the reason I took the Cooking with Coconut class at Oakland?s Asian Cultural Center (OACC) was less about health and more about taste. I?m cuckoo for coconuts (the unsweetened natural stuff). I also wanted to broaden my knowledge of Filipino cuisine, beyond adobo and lumpia.

I know it?s risky to spread the word on the insider cooking classes at OACC, because they may all sell out before I get a ticket, but this is an amazing hidden pearl for DIY ethnic food fans: intimate hands-on workshops, most priced under $50 for a three-hour class that includes lunch. (A few months ago, I savored Thy Tran?s Steamed Asian Sweets class at OACC.)

When I arrived in OACC?s kitchen on a recent Sunday and surveyed the ingredients for Cooking with Coconut arranged on tables around the room, I was puzzled by the absence of the familiar brown hairy globes. Turned out we were using young or immature coconuts, which take the form of squat white cylinders with pointed tops.

young coconuts Collage

Aileen Suzara, a 2nd generation Filipina American, guided eight of us through three coconut-centric recipes from her culture:

Binakol: a chicken soup, featuring fresh coconut water, shallot, garlic, ginger, mushrooms and young coconut slices.

Laing: a green vegetable dish traditionally made with taro leaves, coconut milk and chilis. Suzara opted for fresh kale leaves instead of taro and upped the ante with coconut cream, plus plenty of garlic and ginger.

And for dessert, Palitaw: simple rice flour dumplings rolled in sesame seeds and chopped coconut.

To round out the meal, she shared some precious heirloom black rice a friend had brought back from the Philippines.

Against a background of resounding drumbeats from OACC?s Lion Dance class next door, Suzara demonstrated the ease of cracking open the stocky, young coconuts. A few decisive whacks of a cleaver, and coconut water came gushing forth. Then she showed how easy it is to scoop out the soft, slimy white flesh with just a spoon. While some of us scraped out coconut meat, others chopped ginger, as directed by Suzara, ?in pieces big enough to slap you in the face with a burst of ginger.?

busy hands

As soon as Suzara spooned a dollop of coconut oil into the hot wok, followed by the chopped shallots, ginger and garlic, a symphony of aromas filled the room. Chicken thighs browned and then slowly simmered in the coconut water collected from the half-dozen young coconuts. Black peppercorns, and lemongrass were added to the soup and finally oyster mushrooms and the white coconut meat.

Suzara, who encouraged us to cook with our senses instead of relying exclusively on recipes, modeled how to cheerfully roll with the punches of a few kitchen mishaps. These ?teaching moments? -- as she referred to the pop-up surprises -- included: a little cut here, a minor burnt wooden board there and a rice flour mixture that was too liquid, so she changed desserts mid-course.

serving time
Our lunch of binakol, laing and palitaw

While we enjoyed our collectively created lunch, Suzara shared a little about herself. After studying environmental science, she worked with non-profits on environmental re-education, catered Filipino cooking and completed a program at UC Santa Cruz in ecological horticulture.

She is active in social justice and agricultural education and wants to help her community make wise food choices. She cites the impact that 400 years of Spanish and US colonization has had on the traditional Filipino diet, resulting in, for example, a switch to refined flour and convenience foods and fried dishes which were traditionally enjoyed for just for special celebrations (like lumpia) that have become defining dishes of the cuisine.

(This reminded me of a similar struggle in African American food culture portrayed in the film, Soul Food Junkies.)

As we cleaned up the kitchen, I interviewed Suzara about how she learned to cook Filipino food, her involvement in agricultural education and her future plans.

aileen Collage

Why did you pick coconut as the focus of this class?

Coconut is close to my heart. My father is from Bicol, a region of the Philippines famous for its coconut dishes, so cooking with coconut is in my blood. In the Philippines, coconut is called the ?Tree of Life? because you can use every part it. Its trunk and leaves provide building materials and home d?cor, its oil is used in beauty products and is very healthy for cooking, coconut sugar is better for diabetics and coconut milk is used all over South East Asia, the Philippines and the Pacific Islands.

I grew up in five different states but spent my adolescence on The Big Island Hawaii, so I ate the local coconuts there. When I was a freshman, they held a school ?Olympics? with running and swimming events but somehow even though I was the scrawniest 14-year old, they put me in the coconut cracking and husking competition. Of course, I was slower and lost to a bunch of big boys, but I got the process down.

Did you learn to cook Filipino specialties from your parents?

Yes and no, I?m somewhat self-taught. My hardworking parents worked long hours as a nurse and doctor. When I was about eight, they gave me free reign in the kitchen and I started cooking for the family. At first I did scrambled eggs but later moved on to soups and stews. Then I found some old Filipino cookbooks, including one that my mom brought when she immigrated at 23. It was in English but there were all these words for ingredients that I had never seen before. I wanted to learn what it all meant.

Growing up, meals were flavored by my parents? ?post-WWII diet? of American imports -- things like Spam, Vienna sausage, corned beef -- and of course, fish and rice. So that?s the kind of thing they cooked. But when I was eight, we took a trip back to the Philippines and I met my grandparents and extended family. They took me to these huge markets. I tasted everything and fell in love.

Didn?t you just come back from living and working on a farm?

Yes, first, I spent six months in an apprenticeship program at UC Santa Cruz in ecological horticulture. Here?s a video from the Filipino channel interviewing Aileen about her experience working on the organic farm.

ADOBO NATION. Sustainable Farming. from Jeremiah Ysip.

And I just returned from Pie Ranch, an educational farm in Pescadero with a youth program that teaches young people to learn where their food comes from. I helped care for their 250 chickens, goats and 15+ acres of wheat, squash and other crops.

What are some of your future plans?

If there?s anything I learned from experiences in the food world, it?s that we need more culturally relevant models. I hope to be part of developing new programs to engage Asian-Pacific youth. Filipinos have a long history of leadership in the food movement that unfortunately, not enough people are aware of. In the early 1900s thousands came and worked on California farms. And while many people have heard of the United Farm Workers, they may not know of Filipino organizers like Larry Itliong, who worked alongside Cesar Chavez and co-founded the movement.

I?d like to grow traditional ingredients used in Filipino cuisine and work with my community for more access to healthy fresh food and on health issues linked to food. It?s the immigrant paradox, as what we may now think of as a typical Filipino diet has steered away from plant-based foods, which have always been part of our traditions, one reason why heart disease, type 2 diabetes and hypertension have all become so common.

I just moved back to Oakland. This week, I start my new job as Garden Coordinator for a green school program at a San Francisco elementary school.

Watch for Aileen Suzara to teach more classes at OACC and share her cooking in a pop-up sponsored by West Oakland?s People?s Grocery to celebrate Filipino American History Month in October.

Germany calls off Sudan investment forum after embassy storming

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Germany has called off a conference next month to drum up investment for Sudan after its embassy in Khartoum was stormed in protests against a film that insults the Prophet Mohammad, Sudanese officials and diplomats said on Thursday.

The move is a blow for Sudan which has been trying to attract investment to help overcome an economic crisis worsened by the loss of most of its oil reserves when arch-foe South Sudan declared independence in July 2011.

Germany, one of the few Western countries with good ties to Khartoum, had planned to host a conference in mid-October to foster economic cooperation with Sudan, according to diplomats.

The event, scheduled to be held in Germany, would have been a rare chance for Khartoum to meet Western firms reluctant to invest in the African country due to a U.S. trade embargo, weak laws and corruption.

Diplomats said Berlin decided to shelve the event after protesters set the German embassy on fire on Friday to demonstrate against the film which depicts the prophet as charlatan and womanizer.

Protesters had also targeted the U.S. and British embassies.

The German Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the conference specifically, but a spokeswoman said its embassy in Khartoum was unable to function as normal due to the damage it suffered during the demonstrations.

UNDER PRESSURE

Western diplomats in Khartoum said Germany was surprised Sudan had criticized it for allowing protests last month by right-wing activists carrying a caricatures of the prophet.

The country had also criticized Chancellor Angela Merkel for giving an award in 2010 to a Danish cartoonist who depicted the prophet in 2005, triggering demonstrations across the Islamic world.

Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is under pressure from Islamists who feel the government has given up the religious values of his 1989 Islamist coup.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry said Berlin had informed it the conference would be postponed indefinitely.

"Both sides will announce a later date," it said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle sent a senior diplomat to Sudan to discuss security issues and "conditions for relations between the Sudan and Germany," according to a statement.

Diplomats said Germany had planned the Sudan investment conference on its own, so it would not have to rely on other Western powers which often criticize Khartoum for a campaign against rebels in two southern border states.

In March, Norway and Turkey had called off a similar investment conference after the United States signaled it would not participate due to Sudan's human rights record.

Western powers shun Bashir who was indicted by the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Darfur, scene of a nearly-decade old insurgency.

Quit Smoking: The 10 Step Plan - Introduction

Quit Smoking: The 10 Step Plan - Introduction

Sian Welby talks to Dr Chris Steele about the addictive and harmful effects of nicotine. Dr Chris explains that nicotine is, milligram for milligram, more addictive than heroin and cocaine. Within 7 seconds of drawing on a cigarette the nicotine will be acting on the brain. This is why it can be so hard to quit. One in two of all smokers will be killed by it. It is the most dangerous consumer product available on the market. Nicotine itself is not dangerous, but when you smoke you breath in more than 4,000 other chemicals - this is what makes it lethal. With smoking still growing among your girls, there is a big health issue here. Although the smoking ban is helping, the enduring appeal of the "cool" look associated with cigarettes makes them attractive to young people. But there is help. Nicotine replacement treatments can remove the craving for cigarettes, without damaging your health. Also available on prescription are treatments such as Zyban and Champix.

U.S. Department Of Health & Human Services Partners With Ad Coun

U.S. Department Of Health & Human Services Partners With Ad Coun

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Partners with Ad Council and DreamWorks to Combat Childhood Obesity PSAs featuring Shrek characters urge kids to "Be a Player. Get up and play an hour a day." WASHINGTON, D.C., February 1, 2007 / PRNewswire / – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Ad Council joined with DreamWorks Animation SKG today to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to help address childhood obesity. Featuring characters from the movie Shrek, the PSAs are an extension of HHS' ongoing "Small Step" Childhood Obesity Prevention campaign, which encourages children and families to lead healthy lifestyles. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt unveiled the ads at a press conference in Washington, D.C. this morning. The new PSAs, using the slogan "Be a Player: Get up and play an hour a day," urge all children to engage in physical activity. The PSAs will complement the current "Can your food do that?" PSAs which promote the benefits of eating healthy foods. Created pro bono by ad agency GSD&M, the ads include television, outdoor ads and web banners, which direct children and families to visit HHS's newly redesigned website, www.HealthierUS.gov, for suggestions on a healthier lifestyle. The Cannery, a west coast online development firm, created the new homepage, along with a kid's website at www.smallstep.gov, which includes games and activities to support the new PSAs. "We are pleased to collaborate with DreamWorks Animation SKG to address childhood obesity and possibly thwart the onset of chronic disease," said HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt. "I hope to find innovative ways to work as partners with many other companies in creating a culture of wellness. I am a strong supporter of the President's HealthierUS initiative and encourage all Americans to be physically active every day; eat a nutritious diet; get their preventive screenings; and make healthy choices." According to HHS' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. More than 10 million school age children in America–18 percent are considered overweight. In addition to the psychological and social issues of stigmatization, overweight children are at far greater risk of growing into adults who have cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases that may reduce the length and quality of their lives. During the event, Secretary Leavitt announced campaign support from member companies of the Ad Council's Coalition for Healthy Children. The Coalition was initiated in 2005 to help combat childhood obesity by developing consistent, research-based messaging for marketers, media, government agencies, non-profits, academics and the private sector. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided support for the Ad Council's research and development of these health messages, which will ultimately be disseminated to the public by Coalition member organizations such as PepsiCo, General Mills, Kraft Foods, Kellogg, Coca-Cola, SUBWAY, McDonald's, American Heart Association, Girls Scouts of the USA, Shaping America's Health, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Univision Communications. During 2007 and 2008, the Coalition will provide messaging and creative material for its members to utilize in their own communications, including an online presence across major marketers, non-profits and government agency websites, in-store and on-pack promotions sponsored by advertisers and significant media commitments. These materials will support the work of HHS and extend the "Be a Player" message, some of which will reach consumers in the first quarter of 2007. Further details regarding Coalition member support can be found in the accompanying quotes from organization spokespersons. "Despite all of the emphasis focused on childhood obesity in our country during the last several years, many children and families are still not making the necessary changes to lead healthy lifestyles," said Ad Council President and CEO Peggy Conlon. "We are delighted to continue our partnership with HHS with this new series of PSAs that are both motivating and entertaining for children. I am confident that this work, combined with the wonderful efforts of our Coalition, will have a significant impact on this epidemic." Using the Ad Council's model, all of the PSAs will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media. Several media companies have made commitments to donate time and space to support the PSAs. These media companies include Nickelodeon, Outdoor Advertising Association of America, Turner Broadcasting System, Univision Communications, Discovery Communications, Azteca America, Comcast Spotlight and Cox Communications. "DreamWorks Animation is pleased to support HHS and the Ad Council on this important initiative," said company chairman Roger Enrico. "We can think of nothing more important than the well-being of our children. It's a delight for us to be able to share Shrek, Donkey and other great movie characters to help encourage kids to play and be active." "We were honored to be asked to help with this campaign with some new partners and DreamWorks," added Roy Spence, president and founder of GSD&M. "Using Shrek and all the wonderful characters in this creative collaboration was the perfect way to show children why it's important to get out and play." In addition to the new Shrek creative, the Ad Council and HHS are continuing their Small Step Obesity Prevention PSAs with new work (television, radio, outdoor, Web) expected to launch in April 2007. In an effort to further the reach of these ads and generate excitement among youth, HHS will partner with YouTube for an online video contest beginning in Spring 2007 that will encourage participants to submit videos based on the Small Step content. The Obesity Prevention campaign launched in March 2004, targeting adults, and focuses on the power of small steps taken regularly. The campaign expanded its target to children in the fall of 2005 and currently aims to encourage all children and families to lead healthy lifestyles. Since the campaign launch, the PSAs have received more than 0 million in total donated media support. Additionally, the campaign website, www.smallstep.gov, attracted an average of 190,000 visits per month during 2006.
