Ex-Pak military lawyer accuses army of assault over legal challenges

Col Inam-ul-Rahiem alleged that his 19-year-old son was beaten up and his car set ablaze by armed men without any provocation near the army headquarters in Rawalpindi on Saturday. The alleged assault came three days after an attack on Col Rahiem left with him with injuries to his face, head and upper body, reports the BBC.

The Pakistani army has denied the allegations, calling them "baseless".

For the past five years, 57-year-old Col Rahiem has been challenging the army over charges of enforced disappearances. He represents dozens of so-called missing persons who, their families say, are being held by the intelligence agencies.

"The attacks were a message to dissuade me from pursuing court cases against the illegal actions of the army leadership. I have reasons to believe the assaults were carried out by agents of the military intelligence on the orders of the army chief," Col Rahiem said, adding that when he went to the police to report the attack, they refused to register his case.

"Last year, they called me in at the offices of the Military Intelligence and told me to drop cases of enforced disappearances or else, anything could happen to me," he said.

Col Rahiem, who taught military law to officers for 27 years and served as a judge in the legal branch of Pakistan army, said he was retired prematurely when he resisted pressure from the top in deciding court cases before him.

Some have described Col Rahiem as a religiously-minded maverick lawyer.

Last week, he filed a writ petition challenging the validity of the three-year service extension for Army Chief, Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Previous court petitions on the issue had amounted to nothing. But this time, to the surprise of many, the Islamabad High Court admitted the plea.

The matter is now set for hearing by a two-member panel on 22 November. (ANI)

The Horrible Herdmans' Takeover Unexpectedly Results in ?The ...

On Nov. 2-4, 7-11, and 15-18, Raleigh Little Theatre will present a youth-theater production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, adapted for the stage by Barbara Robinson from her perennially popular 1972 novel about the horrible Herdman children and how they mercilessly bullied their classmates at school and then invaded rehearsals for a church?s annual Christmas pageant and strong-armed their way into all the plum roles. RLT youth theater and education director Linda O?Day Young will stage this 1982 holiday classic in RLT?s Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre.

Young admits, ?I love this play. It encourages us to consider the traditional story of Christmas from a different perspective. We see the human side. We see a Mother, a Father, and their new baby far away from home with no place to stay. We feel their sense of fear and loneliness.

?And it is through the Herdmans ? a group of ill-behaved, dirty, poor, and rough kids ? that we are able to see this human side,? claims Young. ?The Herdmans? participation in the Christmas pageant gives us all an opportunity to reflect on the many times we have misjudged people. ?The worst kids in the whole history of the world? let down their guard, open their hearts, and give us something to think about.?

In addition to director Linda O?Day Young, the Raleigh Little Theatre creative team for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever includes music director Yvonne Koch, technical director Todd Aberts, set and lighting designer Thomas Mauney, costume designer Jenny Mitchell, sound designer Becca Easley, and stage manager Karyn Aberts.

Director Linda O?Day Young says, ?The costumes are contemporary church clothes, except of course for the Herdmans. The pageant costumes have that home-made look.?

At the beginning of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Linda Young notes, ?Young Beth Bradley (Cee Cee Huffman) greets us, and begins to tell us about her family, her Sunday School, some rowdy kids, and a simple Christmas pageant, which turns out to be a whole new Christmas story.

?Helen Armstrong (Kelly Watson) is the one in charge of most of the church social events including the annual Christmas pageant, but unfortunately she is in the hospital with a broken leg,? Young explains. ?Many church ladies are called to take over for Helen; but although Mrs. McCarthy (Becca Easley) is happy to take on the potluck supper and Mrs. Slocum (Nikki Kunkel) assumes responsibility for the bazaar, no one is able or willing to direct the Pageant. So, the task falls to a stunned Grace Bradley (Jenny Anglum).?

Young adds, ?The pageant has already been a source of family conflict with Grace?s son Charlie (David Snee) refusing to be a shepherd again this year and her husband Bob (Barney Weaver) hoping not to have to attend. ?There?s never anything different about the Christmas pageant[,' he complains.]

?This conflict is immediately solved when Grace takes on the pageant challenge,? says Young. ?Charlie will be a shepherd; Bob will help her; and daughter Beth, as usual, will be in the Angel Choir. [It s]ounds simple until Charlie, fed up with having his lunch dessert stolen by Leroy Herdman (Langdon Ogburn), stands up to him, announcing that he doesn?t care because he can get all the dessert he wants in Sunday School.

??That was the wrong thing to tell a Herdman,? says Beth. The next Sunday all of the Herdmans are there, Ralph (Connor Gerney), Imogene (Lauren Toney), Leroy, Claude (Dason Fuller), Ollie (Eva Tylka), and Gladys (Marleigh Purgar-McDonald). ?The worst kids in the whole history of the world? are at Sunday School; and, what?s worse, they?re all volunteering to be in the Christmas pageant!? says Linda O?Day Young.

She adds, ?To Grace Bradley?s surprise, Imogene Herdman wants to be Mary. Even more surprising to Grace, Alice Wendleken (Shannon Lyons), who always plays Mary, refuses to volunteer. Ralph Herdman will play Joseph. Elmer Hopkins (Bevan Therien), who always plays Joseph, doesn?t seem to mind. After all, he was offering to pay a dollar to anyone who could take the role this year.

?Leroy, Claude, and Ollie Herdman will take on the roles of the three Wiseman; and Gladys Herdman ? probably the scariest Herdman of them all ? will be the Angel of the Lord. This leads some of boys (Parker Perry, Graham Gall, and Chaz Strickland) to offer excuses as to why they can?t be shepherds, but Grace won?t allow anyone to quit the pageant,? says Young.

?None of the rehearsals go smoothly,? she reports. ?When the Herdmans hear the Christmas story for the first time, they vow to seek revenge on Herod. The final rehearsal abruptly ends when Imogene Herdman?s cigar-smoking break in the bathroom leads Mrs. McCarthy to call the fire department. The church is evacuated. Chaos ensues. The street is filled with crying baby angels (Charlotte Chiavetta, Chloe Guerrero, and Bella Strickland); and inside the Church, Claude and Gladys Herdman are attacking the fireman (Jorge Santos).

Young adds, ?The Reverend Hopkins (David Watts) thinks they should cancel the pageant, but Grace Bradley refuses. The community is convinced it will be a disaster; and for that reason on Christmas Eve, the Church is packed.

?The pageant begins with Maxine (Maddy Kunkel) reading the Christmas story while hymns are sweetly sung by the Angel Choir (Cee Cee Huffman, Shannon Lyons, Riley Watson, Hannah Kodadek, Pippa Dunne, Molly Anglum, Hannah Hoskins, Lauren Taylor-Carrillo, and Zoe Watts). Then the Herdmans enter and the whole new story begins.?

When The Best Christmas Pageant Ever made its professional debut on Nov. 26, 1982 at the Seattle Children?s Theatre, The Seattle Times called it: ?One of the best Christmas stories ever ? and certainly one of the funniest.?

Apple may be ordered to discontinue iPhone sales in Mexico

Apple just lost a court battle to use the iPhone name in Mexico due to another company already owning the trademark to the name iFone, which they say is similar enough to argue a ban. This could mean that Apple will be ordered to cease sales of the iPhone in Mexico.

Back in 2009, Apple filed suit for the company to discontinue use of the iFone brand arguing that it was too simliar to their own brand. The problem lies in the fact that the company had owned the trademark as far back as 2003. The Mexican company then decided to countersue Apple for damages, and they won. The damages could end up totaling over 40% of Apple sales of the iPhone in Mexico.

The decision could have a considerable impact on the Mexican smartphone market. Telcel and Movistar, numbers one and two among Mexican carriers, are scheduled to begin selling the iPhone 5 on Friday. It is not certain how quickly the sales ban will go into effect or if the two companies will come to some sort of financial settlement.

Basically, if Apple and the Mexican company can't come up with an arrangement or agree on terms, Apple could be ordered to stop selling the iPhone in Mexico. Apple has long been known to use its financial influence to acquire patents, branding, and many other license types. Considering the firm's initial demands for damages amounted to almost 40% of iPhone sales in Mexico, the price to settle may be much more.

It's still unclear how soon Apple would be ordered to stop sales in Mexico and whether or not an agreement will be reached before that time comes.

What the Legend of Contrarian Investing is Buying Now ...

Last week, I had lunch with one of my investing heroes? David Dreman.

A few moments after lunch, I introduced him to speak to a crowd of 400 or so investors.

Today, I?ll share with you why Dreman is a legend to me? and what he thinks right now?

Dreman is a legend because of what he did in 1979. I explained it as I introduced him at an investment conference. Here?s what I said:

David Dreman literally wrote the book on contrarian investing strategies. Consider this: His book called Contrarian Investment Strategies came out in 1979?

You have to realize, when the book came out, stocks had done nothing for a dozen years. David said that it was time to buy stocks ? that they were incredibly cheap.

I bet David and his mom were the only people to buy the book? NOBODY wanted to buy stocks back then.

But he got it exactly right. The greatest two decades in the entire history of stocks was from 1979 to 1999. And Dreman, more than anyone else, called it.

I love that Dreman didn?t listen to what anyone else had to say. In 1979, he trusted his own research.

He understood that stocks were dirt-cheap and out of favor. After a dozen years of poor performance in stocks, investors were busy buying gold and bonds and avoiding the stock market. Sound familiar to today?

What?s Dreman saying today?

These days, he?s fearful of inflation, and he believes stocks are the place to have your money? He?s been writing a column for Forbes for 30 years. Here?s what he said in his most recent column:

Smoldering inflationary fires will burst into an inferno once the unemployment rate falls below 7.5%, if not sooner. In this environment, good stocks, not Treasuries, are the place to be.

What?s he doing with money now?

Given my bullish views, I am in buying mode? We will undoubtedly have more scares and volatility ahead, but if you?ve taken an ultraconservative ?approach to date, it?s time to revamp your assets in preparation for rising ?inflation and interest rates.

Dreman wrote a white paper on ?The Case for Inflation? in 2011. In it, he said:

We think it?s unquestionable that inflation is in our future for some time? it?s just as certain that a portfolio of great companies will protect an investment portfolio from the challenges to come.

Dreman doesn?t follow the crowd. He is the ultimate contrarian.

And right now, this contrarian is expecting inflation, and he believes high-quality stocks (like cigarette giant Altria and banking giant Wells Fargo) are the best place to be positioned.

NEW YORK (AP) ? As the first deadlines of baseball's offseason passed, the Los Angeles Angels allowed pitcher Dan Haren to become a free agent Friday night and David Ortiz agreed to a $26 million, two-year contract to remain with the Boston Red Sox.

Los Angeles tried to trade Haren before the midnight deadline to exercise his $15.5 million option, but a proposed deal with the Chicago Cubs for closer Carlos Marmol fell apart and the Angels decided to decline the option and pay Haren a $3.5 million buyout.

"Obviously, it didn't happen," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "We had a variety of different deals that we worked through during the course of the last week or 10 days. Some were closer than others. But I'll leave it at that."

Haren was 12-13 with a career-worst 4.33 ERA this year and the right-hander was on the disabled list for the first time. He became the second starting pitcher in three days to be jettisoned by the busy Angels, who shipped Ervin Santana to Kansas City for minor league left-hander Brandon Sisk on Wednesday.

A baseball official with knowledge of the Ortiz negotiations said the designated hitter could earn $30 million in the 2013 and '14 seasons, including bonuses. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been signed.

Speaking at the Celtics' home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night, Ortiz said, "We haven't finished it up yet."

"It's coming," he said as he walked back to his courtside seat at the TD Garden. "It's coming."

Ortiz was a free agent and able to discuss money with all teams at midnight. The Red Sox made him a $13.3 million qualifying offer ? new under baseball's labor contract ? earlier Friday, but the sides continued negotiating and reached an agreement a few hours later.

Ortiz batted .318 with 23 homers and 60 RBIs while missing almost half the season due to a strained right Achilles tendon.

The Yankees made qualifying offers to right fielder Nick Swisher, pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and reliever Rafael Soriano.

Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton, Tampa Bay outfielder B.J. Upton, Atlanta outfielder Michael Bourn, Washington first baseman Adam LaRoche and St. Louis pitcher Kyle Lohse also got the offers before the 5 p.m. deadline.

Players have until Nov. 9 to accept the qualifying offers. If a player turns down the offer and signs elsewhere, his former team would receive an extra selection immediately following the end of the first round of next June's amateur draft.

The Angels declined to make a qualifying offer to free-agent outfielder Torii Hunter.

"We want to create as much flexibility as we can in our ability to navigate for 2013 and beyond," Dipoto said. "In business, sometimes you make tough decisions."

After adding Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson last year for a combined $317.5 million, the Angels appear a bit more cautious this offseason.

"You can't just continually gather assets without having logical solutions as to how they all fit," Dipoto said.
