Family Home and Life: Arizona Picnic in July

I wrote this last month and I'm just now getting around to posting it.

?

Being house bound with a 2 year old for ten hours can seem a bit daunting; for you and the child. Summers here in the AZ deserts are to be endured for the most part. Yesterday, at my sons home and with only the one child to care for I decided to go on an adventure and have a picnic at the nearby park for lunch. It was forecasted to only be in the low 100's so I felt that was as much as anyone could hope for until fall. We packed a bag and quilt, strapped and buckled into the car for a ride to the drive through of the neighborhood golden arches. I was too lazy to pack a lunch and there would be a surprise in the little box that also contained a somewhat nourishing meal.

At the park I made a couple of drive bys looking for a tree with some shade to park under. I'll do anything for that shady parking spot even if it means walking a lot farther. Parked and unloaded I realized we would need to walk a long ways in the opposite direction of the play area to get to the gate opening and then walk back in the sun. I chose to set our bags over the fence, lift the two year old over it and then do my best to squeeze climb through the low two rail fence. After I dislodged myself we soon realized the park was rather soggy from the recent rains but we found a spot thick with grass to spread out our quilt. Just as I had our lunch unpacked I noticed a large work truck had unloaded lawn care equipment and the crew began firing up the various mowers, blowers and other obnoxious noisy fume emitting things. We needed to move as we would be in their path sooner rather than later.

At our new spot, a better one after all I decided as it was on the tiniest high spot and mostly dry, we began to eat our prepared meal. Once finished and the surprise toy had been thoroughly played with we walked over to the play area leaving our blanket and belongings behind. There was no one around to bother anything; we seemed to be the only ones at the park this day.

We found the play area to be ankle deep in mud in places and some inconsiderate kids had smeared mud by the handfuls all over the slides and other playground equipment making them impossible to use. We made our way to the swings carefully squishing through the mud on the driest spots we could find. There would be no swinging either; the swings, made of black materials were too hot to touch. My grandchild began to look as if she could cry. Now I knew why we were the only people at the park. I made light of it all as much as I could and said we could read our books back on the quilt.

Back at the quilt we found that our lunch crumbs had been found by ants! Oh my, I considered leaving the whole mess and just going home. But I shook each item as best I could and packed up again we head for the car, squeezing back through the fence.

Back at my sons house, I left everything in the car except what was necessary. I figured any live ants still in our things would die in the heat of a locked up car. The family dog we had left in the yard had decided to dig a hole in the rain softened mud and would need cleaned up before she could come back in. I brushed and scrubbed and finally brought us all into the cool sanctuary of the house. I made cold iced water for all and we began to cool off and our sweat soaked clothing began to dry. I was enjoying the air conditioning and the ceiling fan. My little one settled into playing with her toys and I wondered why I ever thought leaving the house would be a good idea. This nice cool spot with a large glass of ice water was about as good as it could get about then. So much for picnics in July in the Arizona desert! Next time we'll picnic on the kitchen floor :)

(NEWS RELEASE) -- Lola Arslanbekova had a match-high 20 kills and 16 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 upset win over instate rival #10 Kentucky Wednesday night before a record crowd of 5,007 in the KFC Yum! Center.
?
?I helped beat Kentucky as a freshman and now I helped beat Kentucky as a senior. It feels so good,? said U of L senior Lola Arslanbekova. ?It felt like we gained intensity as the match went on.?
?
The last Cardinal win against a ranked team was against #21 Cincinnati on Oct. 16, 2010 with the
last win against a top 10 team coming versus #9 Pepperdine Sept. 10, 2004. U of L improved to 3-1 with the 21-25, 25023, 25-15, 30-28 win. UK (3-1) suffered its first loss, despite outblocking the Cards but couldn?t overcome .156 hitting. U of L hit just .189 but outdug the Cats 80-76.?? U of L freshman setter Katie George came off the bench to notch 22 assists.
?
?Katie George knows no fear. She doesn?t know that she is a freshman. When she looks in the mirror she sees herself as 6-4.? We need a general out there to help us stay loose and confident,? said U of L head coach Anne Kordes.
?
The score was tied at 11 in the first set before UK went on a 7-2 run to go up 18-13 and force Kordes to call her second timeout.? The Cards battled back with a couple of runs to come within two at 23-21 and forced at Cat timeout. UK closed out the set with two straight for the 25-21 win.? Lola Arslanbekova had a set-high seven kills for the Cards and both teams notched three blocks apiece.
?
In the second set, U of L put together a 5-0 run early to take a 7-3 lead and spark a Cat timeout.? U of L spread the margin to five at 14-9 before the Cats came back with six straight to take the lead for the first time at 15-14 and spark a Cardinal timeout.? U of L regrouped and tied at 20. Two straight kills by Lola Arslanbekova pushed the score to 23-22.? UK scored on a blocking error before a Cat miss and a kill by Brooke Mattingly tipped the set to the Cards.? Gwen Rucker had the slide going to the tune of five kills.
?
The Cardinals carried their momentum into the third set, going up 6-1 early on.? The Cats had to call timeout when U of L pulled ahead by seven at 17-10.? UK was unable to regroup and U of L got to set point on a kill by Kaitlynn James. UK staved off set point twice but James connected on another for the 25-15 win.? U of L hitting warmed to .333 in the set, led by James? four kills.
?
There were 22 ties and 12 lead changes in the fourth set as both teams. U of L slogged to set and match point the first time on a kill by Tanya Lukyanenko and then after the Cats countered, Lola Arslanbekova got to the second match point at 26-25, but the Cats countered.? Then the Cats tied at 28 before Gwen Rucker bounced two straight for the win.

Can cold fusion research survive pioneer's death?

Martin Fleischmann kick-started cold fusion controversy and faced decades of hostility. His colleague Michael McKubre ponders the future of the field

Science advances one funeral at a time, said Max Planck. Now Martin Fleischmann is gone, what's in store for cold fusion research?
I like that quote. It implies you've got to wait for the stubborn old bastards to die before you can make progress. But that wasn't Planck's intention: what he meant was that people refuse to even consider unorthodox arguments while their authors are still alive. Once they die, the argument becomes depersonalised. I do think there is an opportunity here. The hostility might abate because Martin is gone.

Fleischmann faced a backlash in 1989 when he and Stanley Pons said they had achieved fusion - the process that powers stars - in a lab. A bold claim that brought scorn for years.
They didn't really claim that. They claimed to have observed an anomalous excess of heat in a tabletop experiment - a palladium electrode loaded with heavy hydrogen, or deuterium. That heat was too great to be explained by chemistry. When Martin and Stan first wrote their paper, they had a question mark after the word fusion. That question mark was removed, apparently, in the review and editing process.

Was that such a big deal?
It was a sociological and possibly political mistake to call it fusion. Scientifically, it was a premature assertion. Whatever Martin and Stan had found and made public was not a cold version of "hot fusion", the kind familiar to nuclear physicists.

Is the distinction important?
Martin and Stan were laying claim to the idea that nuclear reactions occur in condensed matter - solids and liquids - in a manner different to free space, in hot plasmas. In nuclear physics, you've got two choices: fission and fusion. Fusion simply means the combining of light nuclei to make a bigger nucleus with a mass deficit, and that mass deficit shows up as heat. Today it's quite clear that there is some sort of fusion going on - but it is a fusion process that hitherto has not been considered by the mainstream physics community.

Why can't you say what that process is?
We need a good, sound theoretical model - then we can experimentally test it. We have a general idea of what's generating the heat, but the details - how deuterium nuclei get together to fuse - have yet to be resolved. The hot fusion folk who criticised cold fusion got one thing right: if it were a pairwise reaction of only two deuterium nuclei, like in free space, you should always see the same products as in hot fusion. But, generally, we don't see those types of products. A theoretical model is coming. I wouldn't be surprised if we have a good one in the next four or five months.

Do you think Fleischmann was a maverick?
I don't think he set out to be a maverick. Martin was just much more imaginative and inventive than your average scientist. When I was at the University of Southampton, I would see him in the corridor followed by graduate students and PhDs. Whatever their question, he could toss an answer over his shoulder. He was able to conjure up answers and ideas faster than anyone I've known.

Profile

Michael McKubre is an electrochemist who specialises in cold fusion at the independent, non-profit research institute SRI International in Menlo Park, California

No risks seen with flu shot in early pregnancy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Adding to evidence that the flu shot is safe for pregnant women, a new study finds no link between the vaccine and the risk of serious birth defects.

The study, of nearly 9,000 pregnant women who got the flu shot, found that about 2 percent had a baby with a major birth defect, such as a malformation in the heart or a cleft lip.

That was identical to the rate among almost 77,000 pregnant women who did not get the vaccine.

What's more, researchers found, women who got vaccinated were less likely to suffer a stillbirth (a pregnancy loss after the 20th week): 0.3 percent did, versus 0.6 percent of unvaccinated women.

Their newborns also had a lower death rate: 0.2 percent died soon after birth, compared with 0.4 percent of babies born to unvaccinated moms.

It's not clear if the flu vaccine deserves the credit. But Dr. Jeanne S. Sheffield, the lead researcher on the work, said it's possible the vaccine helped by preventing severe cases of the flu.

"Can we say for sure that it's the vaccine? No," said Sheffield, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

But, she added, these findings suggest that the flu shot is at least safe, and possibly has a benefit against stillbirth.

Sheffield and her colleagues report the findings in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other groups recommend that all pregnant women get a seasonal flu shot.

That's because pregnant women are more likely than other women their age to get a severe case of the flu or have complications, such as pneumonia. The flu is also thought to raise the risk of preterm delivery and fetal distress.

Still, Sheffield said, many women and doctors alike still have concerns about flu vaccine safety during pregnancy - especially the first trimester, which is when birth defects form and when most miscarriages happen.

But in this study, the researchers found that vaccination during the first trimester came with no increased risk of birth defects.

Despite recommendations to get the flu shot, most pregnant women do not. In the U.S., only between 10 percent and one-quarter of women have been vaccinated each flu season over the last couple decades, Sheffield's team notes.

Based on studies, that seems largely due to safety worries.

On the other hand, Sheffield said "it's amazing" how many women are unaware that the flu itself is considered a risk during pregnancy.

"The flu is a problem in pregnancy," she said. "But we have a vaccine to prevent it. And it's considered safe and effective in any trimester."

A CDC study published last year found "no unusual patterns" of pregnancy complications or newborn health problems among U.S. women who received the flu shot between 1990 and 2009.

Based on cases reported to the CDC's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, the rate of miscarriage was 1.9 per one million vaccinated pregnant women.

DAILY TRANSFORMATIONAL NUGGETS FOR THE BODY, MIND ...

DAILY TRANSFORMATIONAL NUGGETS FOR THE BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT: Surrendering ? Day 27 ?Surrender to Absolute Power?

The Body Connection:? When we are mindful of what we put into our bodies, we begin the process of surrendering to God.? Mindful eating accounts for 65% to 75% of health and fitness, and our journeys are fueled by what we eat.? What we consume will affect the way our body acts, moves, and feels. A simple rule of thumb is if you want to feel alive, eat living foods.? The nature of the Universe is perfect and absolute, so nature provides everything we need to survive.? Live food has the nutrients we need for healthy living.? Also, if we want to burn fat, we must burn calories.? Eating less and being active is the key.? Your eating is a spiritual experience if you allow it to be.? Eat with a purpose; mindfully nourish the body-temple and commune with your higher self.? Every morsel of living food comes from Source, designed to support you on your journey.

Meditative Thought: True power comes from surrendering to an absolute presence that is greater than our human incarnation. As you begin to grow spiritually, you will see that everything returns to God.? Every situation is an opportunity to remember that the answer always lies within you.? Connect with the Universal presence that is your essence. Allow the Universe to be the solution to all your challenges.

Today?s Action Plan:? Today, make God bigger than your problems.? When you become overwhelmed with all the things that are required for your personal transformation, remind yourself that God is bigger than all of this and that you are supported.? Today, use affirmations to keep you on track.

?

Affirmation:? Just for this moment?just for this breath, I am one with God, and I am blessed.? Amen

Analysis: Friend and foe; Samsung, Apple won't want to damage parts deal

SEOUL (Reuters) - While Samsung Electronics is reeling from a patent pounding by its smartphone rival Apple Inc, this is unlikely to damage the other part of their relationship - where Samsung is the sole supplier of Apple-designed chips that power the iPhone and iPad.

At an emergency meeting in Seoul early on Sunday following the damning U.S. legal defeat, the South Korean group's post mortem was led by vice chairman Choi Gee-sung and the head of the mobile business JK Shin, rather than by CEO Kwon Oh-hyun, whose primary role is in charge of the components business.

The clear message from Samsung is that a strict internal firewall between its handset business and its components operations remains intact.

While it plans to appeal the U.S. verdict, and a damages bill for $1.05 billion for copying critical features of Apple's popular mobile devices - a sum that could be trebled - Samsung will not want to put at risk its Apple supply contract which is worth billions of dollars.

As well as being the only supplier of micro processors for the iPhone and iPad, Samsung also supplies DRAM and NAND-type memory chips and flat screens used in the popular Apple gadgets. Samsung products comprise 26 percent of the component cost of the iPhone, Samsung's lead counsel Charles Verhoeven was quoted as saying in the media.

Samsung's component sales could hit $13 billion next year and bring in $2.2 billion in operating profit, according to a recent estimate by Morgan Stanley. That's nearly 8 percent of estimated group operating profit for next year.

TOO IMPORTANT

Experts and analysts said the symbiotic business relationship between Samsung and Apple is too important for either to put at risk.

"Apple needs Samsung to make the iPhone and iPad. Period. Samsung is the sole supplier of Apple's processing chips and without Samsung, they can't make these products," said James Song, an analyst at KDB Daewoo Securities in Seoul. "Samsung might be considering lots of options to leverage its components business' importance and pressure Apple, and Apple could be also well aware of this."

With that in mind, Samsung had sought to resolve the patent dispute with Apple - which Apple first brought up shortly after Samsung launched its first Galaxy model in 2010 - through negotiation rather than in the courtroom.

"We initially proposed to negotiate with Apple instead of going to court, as they had been one of our most important customers," Samsung said in an internal memo sent to employees and released to the media on Monday. "However, Apple pressed on with a lawsuit, and we have had little choice but to counter sue."

While Samsung has been found to have copied innovative features of the iPhone and iPad, the Korean group's lawyers have emphasized that its own innovative components and wireless technology patents, which the U.S. jury ruled that Apple did not violate, made Apple's products a reality.

"Apple isn't that stupid (to risk its Samsung parts deal). Apple's agreements with Samsung will ensure that Samsung has no choice but to comply and supply," Florian Mueller, an intellectual property consultant, posted on his blog.

"Also, Samsung's other customers would lose faith if it turned out unreliable. And since Apple threatened Samsung with litigation two years ago, it's had plenty of time to identify alternatives."

SHARP SELL-OFF

Samsung itself shrugged off market concerns that its component contracts were at risk due to the litigation. Samsung shares tumbled more than 7 percent on Monday, wiping $12 billion off its market value.

"(The) supply contract remains a separate issue from the litigation and there'll be no change to it going forward," said an executive who took part in Sunday's meeting, which was not attended Jay Y. Lee, chief operating offer and heir apparent to Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee, according to the executive.

Kwon was promoted to CEO in June, with JK Shin and BK Yoon leading the telecommunications and consumer electronics divisions respectively so as to avoid potential conflicts of interest, as Samsung supplies parts to its main rivals such as Apple, Nokia, HTC Corp and Sony Corp.

As demand for mobile gadgets has soared, Samsung announced just last week a $4 billion investment to boost output at its U.S. chip plant, where it makes chips for the iPhone and iPad. That comes on top of $2 billion of spending Samsung unveiled two months ago to build a new chip plant and the conversion of existing chip lines to make logic chips to power mobile gadgets.

SUPPLY CHAIN

Apple has been looking to spread its supply chain to reduce its reliance on Samsung. The U.S. firm frequently faces a supply crunch when a new product is launched, triggering a consumer stampede that drives demand far in excess of supply and production capability.

Earlier this year, a source told Reuters that Japan's Elpida Memory Inc was selling more than half of its mobile DRAM chips to Apple.

Samsung mainly competes with Toshiba Corp and Korean rival SK Hynix in supplying memory chips for Apple, and LG Display in flat-screen panels.

Samsung has around 70 percent global market share in mobile DRAMs, but Apple sources only 40 percent of its mobile DRAM chip requirement from Samsung, a boon to the likes of Elpida and SK Hynix, analysts say.

Shares in LG Display, which is widely speculated to supply a new and thinner panel for the next iPhone, jumped more than 4 percent on Monday. SK Hynix slipped 0.5 percent in a flat market.

"For its part, Samsung is also diversifying its customer base to reduce its reliance to Apple - adding new ones like Qualcomm, and that'll prove to be a good strategy longer term as Apple component margins are generally low due to its huge bargaining power," said Daewoo's Song.

"Other suppliers may benefit from a worsening Apple/Samsung relationship in the short term, but in terms of margins, I'm doubtful they can make good money from any Apple cookie crumbs that Samsung throws away."

Heyward helps Braves?cool off hot?Giants

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:41 p.m. ET Aug. 25, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jason Heyward credits the crowd as much as anything for his success in San Francisco.

Heyward hit a three-run homer and Mike Minor won for the first time in five starts as the Atlanta Braves beat the Giants 7-3 on Saturday, ending San Francisco's five-game winning streak.

"The crowd always keeps you on your toes here and it's a good environment to play in," Heyward said. "They're always here, it's a good team and they have good pitching, so you have to focus every at-bat."

Heyward became the first left-handed hitter to take Madison Bumgarner deep in two years. The slugger has five home runs and 11 RBIs at the Giants' waterfront ballpark.

"I'm just looking for strikes to hit," Heyward said. "Don't miss the one you get to hit because if you do, he's got you."

Michael Bourn had two hits and drove in two runs for the Braves, who had lost six of seven but still lead the NL wild-card race. Reed Johnson and Martin Prado also knocked in runs.

Minor (7-10) gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking none. He also doubled, walked and scored twice.

"I was just trying to get guys out and limit the damage," he said. "I felt good. It's not about being fatigued or anything like that."

Pinch-hitter Gregor Blanco had a two-run double for the NL West-leading Giants, who had won eight of 10.

Bumgarner (14-8) allowed four runs and seven hits over 6 1-3 innings. He matched his season high with four walks and struck out five, losing for only the second time at home.

"He's been so good all year and I thought he still pitched a pretty good game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He made one mistake and it went for a three-run homer."

Bumgarner walked Minor and Prado around a strikeout of Bourn in the third. Heyward smacked a home run into the right-field bleachers to put the Braves ahead 3-0.

"I kind of got out of whack there," Bumgarner said. "It was a fastball up and over the middle of the plate."

Hunter Pence was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth and scored on Brandon Belt's groundout to make it 3-1.

Bourn singled home a run in the seventh to make it 4-1.

"We had a good approach," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I was ecstatic about Minor's performance. He minimized the damage and was dominant."

Blanco doubled off Chad Durbin to drive in two runs in the seventh.

Bourn and Prado each walked with the bases loaded against Jeremy Affeldt to force in runs in the eighth. Johnson doubled home a run in the ninth.

"It got a little sloppy there and we let the game get away," Bochy said.

Voice Over Web Protocol Or VoIP Is The Latest Innovation To The ...

Voice over Web protocol or VoIP is the latest innovation to the many years previous audio communication technologies. The IP telephony transmits voice, video clip and data over the broadband networks. The procedure of contacting over the VoIP is quite akin to a normal phone however, it utilizes higher-pace Internet service, which tends to make it all the more priceless. It minimizes per-minute contact as the technology is based on the packet switching method of the Internet.

IP telephony caters to the require of worldwide market by providing decrease rates for long length and worldwide calling. Functions like cost effectiveness, reliability, performance, security and scalability in IP telephony has produced it right choice for the ?next? Generation individuals.

For availing the advantages of VoIP calling, users must be equipped with an Internet services, ATA or Analog terminal Adaptor, a handset as well as an IP services. A VoIP contact is primarily based on the packet switching technology that converts the audio or analog indicators into little packets of digital data. These data is converted using Analog-to-Digital Converter or ADC. The digital packets are compressed into the established standard format and then routed more than the Web connection. These compressed digital standard packets absorb the noise on the way as a result, the packets get transferred quicker and more efficiently. Whilst routing more than the Web, packets are in compliance with standard communication protocols. The packets are routed more than the various paths when they arrive at the location, there is a re-conversion of the electronic packets to analog signals. These information is transformed utilizing Digital-to- Analog Converter or DAC.

These conversion and re-transformation procedure requires place in the real time and the finish users appreciate continuous speech flow without any delays. The services of VoIP are primarily based on the packet switching method, so contacting more than longer distance is produced easier and less expensive. Whilst opting for a VoIP phone or service, users must verify features like caller ID with name and telephone number contact blocking, contact waiting, three-way calling, call forwarding, and voice mail.

(AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 80 others in the deadliest disaster in memory for the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet its domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released from the hospital.

Officials said those killed included a 10-year-old boy, and that 17 of the 26 victims were National Guard troops stationed at a post next to the refinery.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning in the country.

"This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Chavez said he ordered a "deep investigation" to determine what caused the explosion.

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said the authorities tried "to save the greatest number of lives."

Officials said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where clouds of dark smoke were still billowing at noon.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the state oil company should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We have sufficient supplies... in the entire country, and our production at the maximum to deal with any situation in our domestic market," Ramirez said. "In that sense, we won't have major effects."

An official of the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Ramirez said. An adjacent National Guard post was severely damaged by the blast, along with nearby homes, he said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said. "The blast wave was of a significant magnitude."

Images in the early hours after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky. One photograph showed an injured man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

"The areas that had to be evacuated were evacuated," Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo said on television, according to the state-run Venezuelan News Agency. "The situation is controlled. Of course there's still a fire rising very high, but ... the specialists tell me there is no risk of another explosion."

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to investigate the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor also was appointed to lead the investigation. Troops were deployed to the area.

Ramirez said that nine storage tanks were damaged. He said supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery, and that the fire had been brought under control, though the flames continued to burn up fuel in some of the tanks.

Firefighters were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks, Ramirez said.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to rise from the refinery.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

While the cause of Saturday's disaster remained unclear, some critics of President Hugo Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company known as PDVSA.

"This tragedy is probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years. Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," said Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former executive of PDVSA. Considering that record overall, Coronel said, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management."

Deadly accidents also occurred in Venezuela's oil and natural gas industry in the past. In 1993, a natural gas pipeline exploded beneath highway in Las Tejerias, engulfing a passenger bus and cars. Officials said 36 people were killed.

On Saturday morning, Ramirez said the explosion occurred in an area of the refinery where storage tanks are located. On television, he showed an aerial map of the rows of tanks where the flames raged.

"All of the events happened very quickly," he said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea's Samsung won a home court ruling in its global smartphone battle against Apple on Friday when judges in Seoul said the company didn't copy the look and feel of the U.S. company's iPhone, and that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, in a split decision on patents, the panel also said Samsung violated Apple technology behind the bounce-back feature when scrolling on touch screens, and ordered both sides to pay limited damages.

The Seoul Central District Court ruling called for a partial ban on sales of products including iPads and smartphones from both companies, though the verdict did not affect the latest-generation phones ? Apple's iPhone 4S or Samsung's Galaxy S3.

The ruling affects only the South Korean market, and is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation unfolding in nine countries. The biggest stakes are in the U.S., where Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion over allegations it has created illegal knockoffs of iPhones and iPads.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents, which previously have been shot down by courts in Europe where judges have ruled that they are part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

"This is basically Samsung's victory on its home territory," said patent attorney Jeong Woo-sung. "Out of nine countries, Samsung got the ruling that it wanted for the first time in South Korea."

The ruling ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 from store shelves in South Korea, saying that the products infringed on two of Samsung's five disputed patents, including those for telecommunications technology.

The court also denied Apple's claim that Samsung had illegally copied its design, ruling that big rectangular screens in cases with rounded corners had existed in products before the iPhone and iPad.

"It is not possible to assert that these two designs are similar based only on the similarity of those features," the court said in a ruling issued in Korean that was translated into English by The Associated Press. It also said individual icons in the Samsung products do not appear similar to the icons Apple used in the iPhone.

But the court ruled that Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung had infringed on one of Apple's patents on the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. The court banned sales of Samsung products using the technology, including the Galaxy S2, in South Korea.

Court spokesman Kim Mun-sung said the court's ruling was to take effect immediately, although companies often request that sanctions be suspended while they evaluate their legal options.

Nam Ki-yung, a spokesman for Samsung, said the company welcomed the ruling.

"Today's ruling also affirmed our position that one single company cannot monopolize generic design features," he said.

Apple did not respond to multiple calls seeking comment.

The court also ordered each company to pay monetary compensation to its competitor. Samsung must pay Apple 25 million won ($22,000) while Apple must pay its rival 40 million won.

South Korea is not a big market for Apple, and the ruling is not likely to have a big impact on jury deliberations in the U.S.

However, some industry watchers expressed concern over the South Korean ruling to protect industry standard patents. They say the decision could invite a trade war by giving Samsung and fellow South Korean company LG ? both industry standard patent holders ? more room to block rivals' entrance into South Korea if they don't agree to licensing terms.

"It would mean that foreign companies would either have to bow to Samsung's and LG's demands ... or stop selling in Korea," said Florian Mueller, a patent expert in Munich, Germany who has been closely following the case.

Courts in Europe, including Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany have rejected similar claims by Samsung that Apple violated its wireless patents, with judges arguing that the patents have become part of industry standards. Standard-essential patents are a crucial technology for new players to make products compatible with the rest of the market and must be licensed under fair and reasonable terms.

Europe's anti-trust regulator launched an investigation earlier this year into whether Samsung was failing to license those patents under fair and reasonable terms.

In Friday's ruling, the South Korean court said Samsung did not abuse its market power as an industry standard patent holder.

Apple filed suit against Samsung in San Jose, California, in April 2011, alleging that some of the South Korean company's smartphones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs of Apple's iPhone and iPad. Samsung denies the allegations and argues that all companies in the cutthroat phone industry mimic each other's successes without crossing the legal line.

Cupertino, California-based Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion and demanding that the court pull its most popular smartphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market, making the case one of the biggest technology disputes in history.

Jury deliberations in San Jose began Wednesday after three weeks of testimony. The case went to the jury after last-minute talks between the companies' chief executives failed to resolve the dispute.

Shortly after Apple filed its suit in the U.S., Samsung filed a complaint in South Korea against Apple for allegedly breaching its telecommunications patents.

The battle is all the more complex as Apple and Samsung are not only competitors in the fast-growing global market for smartphones and tablet computers, but also have a close business relationship.

"This is going to go on and on and on," said Barney Loehnis, head of mobile for Asia at public relations firm Ogilvy. "This will never change because the sorts of patents that they're fighting over are such a fundamental essence of using these devices that they're always going to be leapfrogging one over the other."

Samsung, the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips and liquid crystal displays, supplies some of the key components that go into Apple products, including mobile chips that work as a brain of the iPhone and the iPad.

The South Korean firm overtook Apple in less than three years in smartphone markets. In the second quarter of this year, Samsung sold 50.2 million units of smartphones, nearly twice as much as Apple's 26 million units, according to IDC.

Despite the ruling that is widely seen as Samsung's victory, Samsung's share fell 0.9 percent in Seoul.

New insights into salt transport in the kidney

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Sodium chloride, better known as salt, is vital for the organism, and the kidneys play a crucial role in the regulation of sodium balance. However, the underlying mechanisms of sodium balance are not yet completely understood. Researchers of the Max Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch, Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin and the University of Kiel have now deciphered the function of a gene in the kidney and have thus gained new insights into this complex regulation process.

In humans, the kidneys filter around 1700 liters of blood every day, of which 180 liters are collected as primary urine and ultimately one to two liters of urine are excreted. The kidneys thus wash toxic waste products out of the body, but retain some useful substances and reintroduce them into the body, thus simultaneously regulating the salt and water balance.

Molecular velcro

In the study just published by Dr. Tilman Breiderhoff, Prof. Thomas Willnow (both MDC), as well as Dr. Nina Himmerkus and Prof. Markus Bleich (both of the University of Kiel) and Dr. Dominik M?ller (Charit?) the focus is on the claudin-10 gene, which is expressed in a specific segment of the kidney, in Henle's loop. In the thick ascending limb of this loop, , a large part of the filtered sodium chloride, as well as calcium and magnesium are reabsorbed. The gene product under investigation, the claudin 10 protein, belongs to a family of proteins that connect the epithelial cells which cover the inner and outer surfaces of the body and stick them together like velcro. Claudins, however, also form pores, through which ions and substances are transported between the cells.

"If these transport processes are disturbed, this can lead to serious loss of function of the kidneys," Dr. Breiderhoff explained. As example he cited various human hereditary diseases in which either absorption of table salt (Bartter syndrome) or of calcium and magnesium (familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis - FHHNC) is disturbed. The second disease is characterized by a lack of magnesium in the blood and an excess of calcium in the urine, which leads to calcification of the kidneys. It is caused by mutations in one of two genes (claudin 16 or claudin 19), which also belong to the gene family of the claudins.

The researchers have now demonstrated in mice that the claudin-10 gene is involved in the reabsorption of salt in the kidney. If the gene in the kidney is deactivated, the reabsorption of sodium is impaired, but the reabsorption of calcium and magnesium is increased. The consequence is that the mice have elevated magnesium levels in the blood, and excess calcium is deposited in the kidney. Simultaneously, the urine volume is increased because the kidneys of the mice cannot reabsorb enough water, a sign that the recovery of salt is disturbed.
