Asian markets gain in face of US superstorm

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian markets gained Wednesday after Wall Street stayed closed for a second day as a hurricane ravaged the East Coast of the United States.

Oil edged up in Asian trading but stayed below $86 a barrel as investors waited for U.S. employment data that are expected to show little improvement.

In Tokyo, the regional heavyweight, the benchmark Nikkei 225 was up 0.9 percent at 8,901.37. Hong Kong added 0.6 percent to 21,560.1 while South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.7 percent to 1,912.91.

Global markets stayed calm despite Hurricane Sandy's disruption of U.S. trading. Losses Monday in Europe were recovered Tuesday.

"While the economic and social cost of the Superstorm will be counted over coming days, markets in general appear to have brushed off their worst fears," said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

The New York Stock Exchange's decision to close Tuesday marks the first time weather has stopped trading for two straight days since 1888. Experts expect storm damage of about $20 billion, about half of that insured.

The NYSE said it would reopen Wednesday using backup generators because power is out in much of downtown Manhattan.

Wall Street experts had feared another delay might lead to a dangerous backlog of customer orders to buy and sell stock. It could have dealt a blow to the image of U.S. markets, already hurt by investor distrust, sudden market swings and a series of trading glitches, including the botched IPO of Facebook.

Elsewhere in Asia, Sydney's S&P ASX 200 gained 0.7 percent to 4,515.9. Taiwan's Taiex was off 0.1 percent at 7,175.17 and Singapore declined 0.1 percent to 3,035.57.

China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.3 percent at 2,056.95.

On Tuesday, markets in Britain, Germany and France all rose. They were boosted by gains for BP, which announced a big dividend increase, and Swiss bank UBS, which revealed plans to lay off 10,000 staff.

In the United States, investors were looking ahead to Friday's Labor Department release of jobs data that are expected to show little change in payrolls.

"The trend has gone absolutely nowhere since April. Markets expect no change this week," DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said in a market commentary.

Japan's central bank lowered its economic outlook on Tuesday, saying it expected growth of 1.6 percent in the year ending in March, down from previous forecasts of 2 percent.

"The possibility is increasing that the economy is heading towards a technical recession," said DBS.

Japan's economy has been hobbled by weakness in its export sector, which has been hit hard by a slowdown in demand from recession-mired Europe and a strong yen, which makes Japanese products more expensive abroad.

Investors also were watching China, where a once-a-decade handover of power to younger Communist Party leaders is due to start at a party congress next week.

The dollar shed 0.1 percent to 79.55 yen while the euro lost 0.03 to $1.2963 after a European Commission survey showed economic sentiment fell to a 38-month low.

Benchmark crude oil for December delivery rose 11 cents to $85.78 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 14 cents on Tuesday to $85.68.

DeMarco: Giants beating Tigers at own game

That game is starting pitching, and the Giants' Vogelsong has been the best

OPINION

Tony DeMarco

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers brought their superstar ace and microscopic postseason rotation ERA into this World Series.

But the San Francisco Giants are on the verge of their second championship in three Octobers by beating the Tigers at their own game.

Game 3 was Ryan Vogelsong's turn, and it ended exactly the same way as Game 2 ? a 2-0 shutout.

You've probably heard more about the other members of the Giants rotation than Vogelsong ? not to mention the starter they've turned into a stealth setup man. But this postseason is turning into Vogelsong's personal coming-out party.

In a well-traveled career, the 35-year-old right-hander was a Giants fifth-round draft choice in 1998, then was sent away in 2001 in a deal for starter Jason Schmidt. He surfaced with the Pirates for parts of four seasons, went through arm surgery, played a few seasons with two different Japanese League teams, then passed through the Phillies and Angels organizations before landing with the Giants in 2011 as a non-roster invitee.

"And the rest is history,'' Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Such as leading the NL in ERA for a while this season and landing on the NL All-Star team. And now you'll find Vogelsong in the postseason record book, too.

In 24.2 postseason innings over four starts, Vogelsong's ERA is 1.09. The last time anybody went lower in a postseason was Orel Hershiser in 1987 (1.05 ERA in 42.2 innings).

With 5 2/3 scoreless ? albeit testy ? innings on Saturday, Vogelsong ducked under the mark of another postseason legend ? Curt Schilling's 1.13 ERA with the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.

Vogelsong has allowed one or fewer runs in all four of his postseason starts (and his last seven, dating back to the regular season). The only other pitchers to do that in one postseason are Schilling, Burt Hooton (1981) and John ?Blue Moon? Odom (1972).

But Vogelsong only added on to what Barry Zito and Madison Bumgarner did in the first two games. The trio has allowed only one earned run in 18.1 innings, with each coming away with a victory. You have to go back 75 years for the last time that happened ? by the 1937 New York Yankees trio of Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing and Monte Pearson.

This was Vogelsong's most troublesome of his four playoff outings, as he put nine runners on, but then pitched well in traffic.

"I didn't think my stuff was as good as in my NLCS start,'' Vogelsong said. "I really just tried to hit Buster's glove as many times as I could. When the guys are playing defense behind you, it encourages you to just put the ball in play.''

And when you've been where Vogelsong has been in his career, it makes a game's tougher moments a little easier to get through. Double-play ground balls got him out of two-on, one-out jams in the first and third innings, but that was minor compared with facing Miguel Cabrera with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth.

"Right now, he's the best hitter in the game,'' Vogelsong said. "I just tried to make pitches there. It's a lot easier facing him with two outs. I made a good pitch, and he popped it up. This is my first World Series. I've been waiting for this since I was 5 years old, and I wasn't going to go down without a fight, that's for sure.''

Cabrera's popout continued the trend of Giants pitchers? mastering the Tigers' top hitters. Cabrera is 2 for 9 with an RBI in this series. After an 0-for-4, two-strikeout game, Prince Fielder is 1 for 10 and has hit into two double plays.

The Giants aren't the first team to attempt to attack Cabrera by pounding him inside, even off the plate inside. But they've succeeded at it best. Fielder's struggles are deeper, as he has impatiently expanded his strike zone.

"They're great hitters,'' Sabean said. "I certainly understand why with (Justin) Verlander and those two guys, they'd be the favorites in this series. But the game is funny. You still have to compete inning to inning, and we're winning a lot of innings.

"We were ready for this series because of the two teams we played (in the NL playoffs ? the Nationals and Cardinals). Those are two pretty good offensive teams. I hate to use the phrase 'battle-tested' because we're not in the military. But our guys were ready to pitch the way they have needed to pitch, the way they still need to pitch.''

Keanu Reeves And Longtime Manager Hit Bumpy Road

Keanu Reeves Erwin Stoff ManagerEXCLUSIVE: This is a cautionary tale for every Hollywood manager who?s spending a lot of?time producing. Such is the case with Erwin Stoff. The 3 Arts Entertainment president has repped Keanu Reeves for something like 32 years (ever since the actor was 16 years old). The Stoff-Reeves relationship has long been considered one of Hollywood?s most enduring. Until recently. I?ve learned it?s now very much on the rocks.??Keanu Reeves very quietly left 3 Arts. Then he was recently convinced to stay at 3 Arts but with different reps,? says one of my sources. ?Handling him now are Tom Lasally, Nick Frenkel, and David Miner. It?s an attempt to save the client.? I?ve confirmed this with several other insiders, too,?even though Stoff?denied any rift to me. I am told independently that??there?s?no rancor?.

Stoff?of course has been a producer or executive producer on many of Reeves? films dating back to 1991 ? including Bill & Ted?s Bogus Journey, Feeling Minnesota, The Devil?s Advocate, The Matrix, The Replacements, Sweet November, Constantine, A Scanner Darkly, The Lake House, Street Kings, The Day The Earth Stood Still, and most recently?as exec producer of Universal?s troubled 47 Ronin.?That Keanu starrer?from first-time feature director Carl Rinsch has been plagued?by a swelling budget, a reshoot,?two release date delays, and?bad publicity ? prompting the studio to work side by side with Rinsch in the editing room which is highly unusual these days.

Related: Despite Reports, Carl Rinsch Is Still Working On ?47 Ronin?

But increasingly?Stoff is?producing a lot of films not starring Reeves ??credits and paychecks?Stoff probably never would have enjoyed without Keanu as leverage over the years.?Right now, for instance, he?s?in London producing All You Need Is Kill and?that?s where I reached the manager. I?m told?that Reeves? principal?problem stemmed from Stoff?s producing time commitments. ?Keanu for 20 years was so used to talking to Erwin all the time.?But Erwin is very busy producing now,? one insider explains.?But another source also tells me, ?Keanu has been frustrated with Erwin for a while, with the?massive 47 Ronin problems and lack of material for him.?Also Reeves? sister is now in the actor?s life in a big way, and she did not like Stoff.?

The result is that, according to?one?insider, Keanu ?decided to stay with 3 Arts but it was a bumpy road. There was not a parting of the ways, but there was a little bit of a separation.? As one of my sources explained, Keanu ?is still with the company but those [other 3 Arts] guys now take care of him and his business.?The spin inside 3 Arts is that ?Keanu wants to return to a higher profile so different 3 Arts reps were brought in.??

I hear other managers already are circling Reeves but?he has not formally taken any meetings elsewhere. He is presently editing?his movie?Man Of Tai Chi that?he starred in, directed and filmed in China with investors there.?CAA?s Beijing office helped set up?what?s described as his dream project.

That man Quilts?: OMG, what have I done?

Hi, my name is Lane.? This is my daughter Sydney.

She?s a freshman.? My personal goal for basketball this year is to do things I?ve never done.? My favorite basketball memory is watching Sydney walk out to the car in her practice uniform and cowboy boots.? She blamed this crime against fashion on Rob, who told her not to wear her new, expensive basketball shoes outside the gym.

Last night was the mandatory parent meeting for girls basketball and that?s the kind of introduction each of the girls had to give about themselves.? If they didn?t want to share a goal or memory, the could share an appropriate quote.? Some did and the quotes were very appropriate.?

I don?t remember much of what Sydney said.? She introduced herself and pointed us out and said ?and those are my two Daddies back there.?? and a Mom yelled ?where?.? and Sydney pointed again and said ?back there? and Rob and I waved.? And, I don?t remember much of what happened after that.

Now, before you get all misty eyed, yes that was a wonderful thing for her to do and I am so proud of her for doing it.? But, I?m from an old school and while I was busting my buttons with pride, not just that she pointed us out, but that she did it so proudly, I was also trying to crawl between two floor tiles because I guess it is always going to be uncomfortable to be ?outed? in a crowd of strangers.?

Ya wanna know sumpin?? I?ll live with that, if the next generation can be prouder than my generation was.? That?s progress.

Anyway, after a while, it got to be time for parents to sign up to volunteer.? Before I left the table, I gave Sydney one of my very hard looks and when she said ?what?? I replied, I?m just not sure you know what you?re getting yourself into.

So, what did I sign up for, you ask?? Not food, that?s for sure.? They were looking for people to volunteer to feed 45 people a main course, a side and a drink.? And, Coach did not describe that as sandwiches and chips.

I volunteered to?

Keep the score sheet, keep the clock, and work the gate.? All on different nights.? Each one on three different occasions.?

That is so much NOT like me.? I guess I got caught up in the fervor.? I don?t think Rob approved, and that?s all right.? He?s the one that?s going to have to hear me moan and gripe about ?what did I do?? How did I let myself sign up for this?? I can?t do this.? I?m going to have to talk to people.? What have I done??

But, you know what?? I signed up for the things that interested me the most out of what was presented.?? And, right now, I?m feeling VERY comfortable with what I have volunteered to do.?

Of course, I will be reading up on the game of basketball, because, like I told the coach before I signed up, I?ll volunteer, but I?m going to need training.? I don?t have any idea how to do these things.? And, coach said it didn?t matter.

There were only about 10 of us, signing up for about 60 volunteer opportunities.? So, I don?t feel bad about signing up to work at 9 home games.? Lots of folks didn?t volunteer for anything.?

Another thing that surprised me, and went right along with Sydney not being ashamed that she had two dads, was the fact that so many of these girls were there with a guardian.? Generally a relative.? Half the girls there are being raised by a grandparent or an older sibling.? Unconventional families are all the rage now, I guess, so we?re going to fit right in.?

Keep me in your thoughts.? I don?t always have the confidence I had last night.? I will second guess myself.? I will berate myself.? But, there?s something else about myself.? Even though I?ll be uncomfortable, I?ll be there for every single one of those volunteer opportunities?early.? And, like my Dad taught me, I?ll stay until they don?t need me anymore.

That?s me, too.

Be well and have a great Thursday.? I?m trying to take tomorrow off to do some things that I am not finding time in my regular life for.? Unfortunately, that isn?t just quilting.

And, my Mom told me to tell you all thanks for the good thoughts and prayers during her surgery last week.? She?s doing well and walking on her new knee with little pain.?

HP Softball Plans Memorial Walkathon to Bring Community ...

The Hanover Park High School softball team is hosting the first Ralph Politi Jr. Memorial Walk-a-Thon on Sunday at Lurker Park in East Hanover in memory of the father of twin seniors on the team.

The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature bobbing for apples, face painting, pumpkin painting, music, and throwing and hitting softball activities for children. Attendees also can wear Halloween costumes, and the best costume in each age group wins a prize.

The event will raise money for Between the Lines Club, and the softball team will donate some of the funds raised to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, softball coach Kristen Hogan said.

Ralph Politi Jr., a Hanover Park Regional Board of Education member, was killed by an alleged drunk driver from Parsippany on Ridgedale Avenue on May 5. His death occurred in the middle of the softball season, and the team, including his daughters Dana and Danielle Politi, went on to win the sectional championship.

"We wanted to do something together that would honor his memory and be good for the community," Hogan said.

The walkathon fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 7. Registration is available online at ehsoftball.com and at the park on the day of the event.

Ex-Goldman director gets two years in prison for boardroom leaks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fallen Wall Street insider Rajat Gupta was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday for leaking Goldman Sachs boardroom secrets to the hedge fund manager at the centre of the U.S. government's crackdown on insider trading, a much lighter sentence than prosecutors had sought.

Gupta, 63, who also is a former global head of the McKinsey & Co management consultancy, is the most influential corporate figure to be convicted in a wide U.S. probe of insider trading involving hedge fund managers, traders, consultants and executives.

A Manhattan federal jury in June found him guilty of feeding tips about Goldman Sachs at the height of the 2008 financial crisis to hedge fund tycoon Raj Rajaratnam, his friend and business associate.

The sentence was far less than the eight to ten years that prosecutors had sought, but more than the punishment of probation and community service that Gupta's lawyers had requested.

The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, who questioned why Gupta had turned his back on an "extraordinary" and "selfless" life to commit a crime he did not profit from directly.

Gupta's crime was "the functional equivalent of stabbing Goldman in the back," Rakoff said. "So why did Gupta do it?"

Indian-born Gupta also once sat on the boards of Procter & Gamble Co and American Airlines. He also had advised philanthropies such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Rajaratnam is serving 11 years in prison, one of the longest sentences for insider trading, after his May 2011 conviction.

Apple introduces two new iPads, new Macs

The iPad Mini is about half the size of the regular iPad, and starts at $329.

Apple?introduced a smaller iPad, as expected, but also updated its full-sized one. It also unveiled new Mac computers, including a 13-inch version of a MacBook Pro with sharper, "Retina" display.

With a screen measuring 7.9 inches on the diagonal, the iPad Mini is about half the size of the regular iPad. It's slightly larger than the 7-inch tablets from Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. The regular iPad is 9.7 inches.

Apple?has sold more than 100 million iPads since their debut in April 2010. Although?Apple?dominates the worldwide tablet market with 70 percent of shipments in the second quarter, according to IHS iSuppli, Amazon and Google have been able to make in-roads with the smaller alternatives. A smaller iPad from?Apple?Inc. could help the company cement its dominance.

The event at the California Theatre comes a few days before Microsoft Corp. starts selling a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to work well on both traditional computers and tablets. Microsoft is also releasing its own tablet, the Surface, on Friday. It will be slightly larger than the full-sized iPad.

Here's a running account of?Apple's?event. All times are PDT. Presenters include?Apple?CEO Tim Cook and Philip Schiller, the senior vice president for worldwide marketing.

The event opens with Cook appearing on stage. "We have some fond memories here, and we're going to create a few more today," he told the audience.

10:15 a.m.

Cook began the presentation with a customary update on past products.

Cook talked about the success of the iPhone 5 and the new iPod Touch, both released last month. He said there have been 3 million iPod Touches sold.

He also talked about an upgrade to?Apple's?software for mobile devices, iOS 6. He said there were now 200 million devices running iOS 6.

He said the app store had more than 700,000 apps, including 275,000 for the iPad. Customers have downloaded more than 35 billion apps, he said.

He touted an e-book app called iBooks and announced a new version with a new reading option: continuous scrolling. With that, you keep scrolling down the screen rather than flip pages to keep reading. You can also tap on a quote to share instantly on Facebook or Twitter.

10:20 a.m.

After touting growth in Mac computers at a time when sales of Windows-based machines are slowing,?Apple?introduced a new MacBook. In June,?Apple?introduced a MacBook Pro that is about as thin as its already-slim MacBook Air, but with a sharper display. That model had a 15.4-inch screen.

At Tuesday's event, Schiller unveiled a smaller version, with a screen of 13.3 inches. He noted that the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro that?Apple already makes has been the company's top-selling laptop. The new version adds the sharper display and is thinner and lighter than the regular MacBook Pro.

"In typical?Apple?fashion, we are going to take our best product and introduce something better and much cooler," he said.

The starting price is $1,699.

10:25 a.m.

Schiller teased audience by talking about the Mac Mini, not an iPad Mini.

"You knew there would be something called 'mini' in this presentation," he said to laughter.

How do you minimize 401(k) expenses? - The Help Desk - CNN

When I looked at the funds offered in my girlfriend's 401(k) plan, I noticed that almost all of the funds had maintenance fees of more than 1.65% and a 1% deferred load. Is this common for 401(k)s? Are there ways to minimize her 401(k) expenses? ? Brian

You are right to be concerned, since those fees are fairly high. By comparison, MONEY recently reported that average annual expenses for plans of various sizes ranged from 0.36% in the biggest plans to 1.4% in the smallest. (For more detail on 401(k) fees, go to http://money.cnn.com/2012/07/25/retirement/401k-fees.moneymag/index.htm.) From year to year, the high fees in your girlfriend's plan could be a serious drag on returns.

One way to minimize the impact of fees is to look for passively managed index funds, which are likely to be the cheapest offerings available in her 401(k). If her plan doesn't currently offer index funds, she might consider lobbying her employer or plan sponsor to bring in some lower-cost options.

If she has done what she can to lower fees, she should continue to fund her 401(k) in order to receive any employer matching. That's free money, and even with the slightly higher fees, it will provide a net boost to her retirement savings. But she might consider making contributions beyond that amount to a self-directed IRA or Roth IRA. Just be aware that contributions to IRAs are limited to $5,000 per year ($6,000 for those 50 or older), which is much lower than the current annual 401(k) contribution limit of $17,000 (or $22,500 for those 50 or older).

The key benefit of IRAs to your girlfriend is that they typically feature a much broader range of funds than the average 401(k) plan. Many of these options, such as ETFs, charge lower fees than the average equity mutual fund.

Internet Marketing Success ? How to Accomplish Mor | Travel

Time management is pretty much the hardest subject for Internet marketers to deal with, particularly because they always have more to do and not enough time to do it in. There are so many new marketing strategies that come out every single day and every day competition becomes stiffer which can make your life confusing and difficult. So how do you solve the problem? It?s not that hard; you need to focus on the things that allow you to achieve more in even less time so that you can get as much from your work without having to truly worry about any of the results.

Learn how to properly use the online applications that will help you be more productive while reducing your workload at the same time. There are so many web based tools that don?t cost anything and can help you get so much more done.

For example, it?s totally fine to put your to-do list on paper but if you manage a workload that is largely virtual, wouldn?t it make more sense to manage your to-do list online as well? You?ll find lots of web based apps that will help you get even more from your to-do lists. This is just one example, you?ll easily find lots of other productivity enhancers to help you out.

When you?ve got routine tasks to take care of that are time consuming and mundane ? just go ahead and either automate them or outsource them if you can. As an Internet marketer you need to focus more on increasing your profits and not on getting stuck doing things that can just as easily be taken care of by someone else or an automatic service of some sort.

The more you focus on this, the more growth you can achieve and the faster you will be able to move.

The true secret to accomplishing more and achieving better focus is to work in chunks; it?s super easy to feel exhausted and drained as you work in long stretches of time and that can really slow you down. Rather than multi-tasking your way into a big failure then you need to focus on one thing at a time and actually finish it. When you do this it is easier to remember where you want to go and you won?t have to do too many things at once or get slowed down by too many other projects fighting for brain space. Make sure that you cut your work into little chunks that you can actually accomplish so that you?ll have an easier time working and fighting the urge to quit.

Antibodies to immune cells protect eyes in Pseudomonas infection

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Contact lenses, particularly the extended wear variety, render wearers vulnerable to eye infections from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These infections can cause severe damage, including blindness. Treating the eye with antibodies to the inflammatory immune compound interleukin-17 (IL-17) reduced eye damage and the number of bacteria in a mouse model. The research is published in the October Infection and Immunology.

The onslaught of Pseudomonas infection of the eye is often swift, and is aggravated by the bacterium's resistance to antibiotics. "Pseudomonas is everywhere in the environment, and can be unwittingly introduced into the lens cleaning solution, or directly onto the contact lens, so everyone who uses contact lenses is at risk," says principal investigator Gregory P. Priebe of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and Boston Children's Hospital.

Immune cells known as neutrophils are a major cause of the eye damage that ensues from Pseudomonas infection. IL-17 is involved in attracting neutrophils to the infected tissues. They are the vanguard of immune attack, arriving at a site of infection within an hour, trapping, and ingesting pathogens. In their pathogen-killing function, they also release noxious substances, notably elastase, an enzyme that can chew up tissues, and superoxide, which is converted into hypochlorous acid, more commonly known as chlorine bleach. Thus, the ensuing eye damage is not surprising.

Nonetheless, the strategy of blocking these pathogen killing cells risked reducing the immune system's bacteria-killing function, says Priebe. "Surprisingly, just the opposite was seen: blocking IL-17 with antibodies led both to fewer neutrophils in the eye, and to fewer bacteria," says Priebe. Thus, he says, the research may lead to effective treatments.

"We thought that blocking IL-17 infection might worsen eye infections, but found just the opposite,' says Priebe . "Interestingly, this is a common pattern in eye infections. The body's responses that make the damage worse are often the same things needed to limit infections in other tissues, such as the lung."

Man of the Match:?In a match that required a tough mindset, where physical was paramount to technical ability, Galaxy striker Robbie Keane managed to occupy defenders and to create a little while doing his part in the hand-to-hand combat that played out all over Buck Shaw Field. He also wiggled free for the Galaxy?s first goal.

Packaged for take-away:

  • You could look at it as one of two things: It was either a good, tough, hard-nosed game, where referee Jair Marrufo allowed both teams ?to play,? as they say. Or you could ask: Is this that Major League Soccer wants its game to be, tugging jerseys, impeding runs off the ball, lots of flying hands and elbows, silly schoolyard scuffles, plenty of needless little kicks and stomps behind the play, too many rhythm-disrupting stoppages to attend to injuries, etc.? Take your pick I suppose.
  • At least the mascot didn?t get involved in any of the melees. That actually happened last time these sides met. Not making it up!
  • Either way, the Galaxy managed Job One when meeting the Earthquakes, to match the Supporters Shield winner?s aggression in 50-50 balls, on second balls and on overall physicality. Better organized in the midfield and determined to dish it out as much as they needed to take it, the Galaxy made sure San Jose struggled to punch their way forward on offense.
  • More to the point, both Galaxy center backs, Omar Gonzalez and rookie Tommy Meyer, did a good job of being extra physical with Stephen Lenhart, who still managed to be an effective target man at times, but only when he had time and room to create the timely separation. But by dealing with him physically, they took some of the initiative away from Lenhart. So the dynamic we usually see, defenders getting frustrated while dealing with Major League Soccer version of the Geico Mayhem commercial,
  • The Galaxy, being opportunistic, weren?t far off with three early shots from long range.? In the 9th minute, Christian Wilhelmsson just missed wide after being put clean through wonderfully by Juninho.
  • In the 22nd, Robbie Keane put Edson Buddle through, although Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch handling the situation well, quick off his line to add pressure and blocking Buddle?s effort. So, the Galaxy was easily the most dangerous side over the first 45 minutes, taking 11 of the game?s first 13 shots.
  • David Beckham was out, still recovering from an ankle injury, according to the team?s? Twitter feed.? Of course, there is no mention of Beckham?s ailment on the injury report. So, again, the Galaxy play fast and loose with the injury report rules with no apparent action from the league.
  • In all honesty, Marcelo Sarvas and Juninho are good enough in the center that the Galaxy doesn?t desperately miss Beckham. The offense isn?t as diverse or direct without him, but it doesn?t suffer too much in the run of play. Where the side does miss the former England captain is on restarts; his ability to hit those precision? corners and free kicks does, in fact, add something to L.A.?s ability to produce goals.
  • San Jose?s central defensive enforcement arm, Victor Bernardez, was every bit as imposing and effective.
  • The Earthquakes needed 50 minutes to pose any serious threat to Josh Saunders in the Galaxy goal, and that was on a Gonzalez boo-boo.? The big center back lost focus and allowed a simple ball to bounce past him. Wondolowski pounced and nailed a left-footed shot off the post from 22 yards.
  • Immediately after, Mike Magee saved a Wondolowski header off the line, and quickly thereafter came the mother of all goal-mouth scrambles. It really was on the comical side, as the ball spent about 10 seconds in a tangle of bodies more than a couple of feet outside the Galaxy goal.
  • The home team?s smart change was moving balls quicker to the outside and trying to attack the flanks, rather than channeling things into Lenhart to start the thrusts.? But in opening up the game just a bit, they also left themselves exposed. Just a shade, perhaps, but enough for the Galaxy to find two goals off crosses from the flanks.
  • Hence, a game that was scoreless at the break turned into 2-2.
  • The Galaxy?s movement inside the 18 and runs for crosses are consistently among the league?s best. So it was with the breakthrough goal, as Wilhelmsson pulled defender Ramiro Corrales to the near post while Keane worked the space shrewdly between two defenders in the middle, splitting the distance just right to latch onto Buddle?s cross.

Craig Venter's plan to email vaccines around the world

Debora MacKenzie, Brussels correspondent

125767586_600.jpg

(Image: Joe Raedle/Getty)

Craig Venter, the ?ber-DNA jockey who quietly sequenced the human genome using his own DNA, then made "synthetic life" by outfitting a gutted bacterium with homemade genes, says his next trick will be emailing biological molecules, using 3D biological printers. The move that could revolutionise healthcare - and biological warfare.

Venter discussed the idea at last week's Wired Health Conference in New York - although it was somewhat overshadowed by his audacious plan to sequence Martian DNA and beam the results back to Earth. Long before that sci-fi can be realised, though, bio-printers could more plausibly be used to shuttle vaccines around our planet.

This makes lots of sense. If you can email troops the 3D instructions for printing a replacement gun part , then you can email macromolecules - as long as you have a printer that can deposit a repertoire of nucleotides, sugars and/or amino acids where they belong, and link them up chemically.

You'll need a lot of different toner cartridges to recreate the full range of biological widgets, of course. But you may not need that many for modern vaccines, made not of dead germs but of their key molecules. In fact, for DNA vaccines - which often work well in experiments but have never been commercialised, because of safety concerns - you could do it now with a machine that synthesises DNA to an emailed sequence. Proteins wouldn't be much harder. As long as you also had the vials of sterile saline plus immunity-boosting additives to mix with the DNA or protein, and make it a vaccine.

This has game-changing implications for public health, and for biodefence. The bottleneck in fighting infectious disease, once you invent the vaccine, is getting it to people - if not, 15 kids an hour would not still be dying of measles. The blue-sky US military research organisation DARPA has long been funding efforts to make vaccines in days, rather than months.

Venter's bio-printer, in theory, could both make and distribute a macromolecular vaccine fast. If everyone, or maybe every local clinic, had a bio-printer, a mass email of the vaccine specs should take care of a novel pandemic, or bioterror attack - or maybe even measles - in minutes. Simply print, and inject.

What could go wrong? Well, I can see the mass emailing ending up dumped in a fair number of spam filters. How do we guarantee quality control? Worse, the vaccine specs could themselves become the bioweapon. The bottleneck in biological warfare is getting the germ into the victim. Brew up a false bio-alarm, then intercept and tinker with the vaccine email, and your victims will inject it themselves. And antivirus software takes on a whole new meaning when you can spam-email Ebola or the 1918 flu.

OK, I don't really want to pour cold water - this would be way cool if it works. If we can get the quality control right, and prevent tampering. And the prank emailing of deadly viruses. And resign ourselves to the fact that once this is available, heroin and its ilk will become as impossible to ban as spam.

(AP) ? Sting has moved the location of his "Back to Bass Tour" concert in the Philippines following a petition by environmentalists who said the original venue is owned by a conglomerate that plans to uproot 182 trees for a parking lot and mall expansion in a northern mountain city.

The SM Mall of Asia Arena said on Saturday that changing the site of the Dec. 9 concert was "the decision of the artist himself."

"Understandably, the known environment advocate artist was left with no choice in spite of the SM representatives' appeal," it said in a statement.

SM Prime Holdings, which operates SM malls and the arena on Manila Bay, is owned by the Philippines' richest man, mall mogul Henry Sy.

Environmentalists said in their petition that as a champion of the environment, "Sting can't be saving rainforests and enabling SM to rape the environment at the same time!"

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler established The Rainforest Foundation in 1989 to protect tropical rainforests and the people who live there.

Arena business manager Arnel Gonzales told The Associated Press that the venue became "collateral damage" in the environmentalists' campaign.

"With this successful move to stop Sting from holding the concert at SM MOA Arena, and referring to the venue as an 'oppressor,' it is now looking more like the court battle has extended from saving trees, to ruining a corporate giant's reputation completely," the arena said in its statement.

A local court has temporarily stopped the mall expansion plans in northern Baguio city.

Karlo Marko Altomonte, who initiated the petition, wrote Sting's foundation saying that removing the trees would significantly increase air pollution and the risk of landslides and flooding in an area near schools.

"Thank you, Sting, for helping us defend our environment, our heritage, our home," he wrote on his Facebook page.

How the brain forms categories

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? How do we manage to recognize a friend's face, regardless of the light conditions, the person's hairstyle or make-up? Why do we always hear the same words, whether they are spoken by a man or woman, in a loud or soft voice? It is due to the amazing skill of our brain to turn a wealth of sensory information into a number of defined categories and objects. The ability to create constants in a changing world feels natural and effortless to a human, but it is extremely difficult to train a computer to perform the task.

At the IMP in Vienna, neurobiologist Simon Rumpel and his post-doc Brice Bathellier have been able to show that certain properties of neuronal networks in the brain are responsible for the formation of categories. In experiments with mice, the researchers produced an array of sounds and monitored the activity of nerve cell-clusters in the auditory cortex. They found that groups of 50 to 100 neurons displayed only a limited number of different activity-patterns in response to the different sounds.

The scientists then selected two basis sounds that produced different response patterns and constructed linear mixtures from them. When the mixture ratio was varied continuously, the answer was not a continuous change in the activity patters of the nerve cells, but rather an abrupt transition. Such dynamic behavior is reminiscent of the behavior of artificial attractor-networks that have been suggested by computer scientists as a solution to the categorization problem.

The findings in the activity patters of neurons were backed up by behavioral experiments with mice. The animals were trained to discriminate between two sounds. They were then exposed to a third sound and their reaction was tracked. Whether the answer to the third tone was more like the reaction to the first or the second one, was used as an indicator of the similarity of perception. By looking at the activity patters in the auditory cortex, the scientists were able to predict the reaction of the mice.

The new findings that are published in the current issue of the journal Neuron, demonstrate that discrete network states provide a substrate for category formation in brain circuits. The authors suggest that the hierarchical structure of discrete representations might be essential for elaborate cognitive functions such as language processing.

Your Brain On FoodYour Health Journal | Your Health Journal

From CNN?..

We all know that what you eat can change your physical appearance. It also alters how your body functions, making it more or less difficult to pump blood, grow healthy bones or process insulin.

New research presented this week at the Neuroscience 2012 conference suggests that what you eat can even alter your brain ? and vice versa.

Timothy Verstynen and his colleagues used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe the brain activity in 29 adults. The study participants were shown words on a screen in various colors and asked to identify the color, not the word. Sometimes it was easy ? the word red printed in red; other times it was harder, like seeing the word red printed in blue.

The overweight and obese participants? brains showed more activity during difficult questions, suggesting they were working harder to get the same answers.
Verstynen said the results imply that obese people are less efficient at making complex decisions, which could be important for controlling impulse behavior.

His team theorizes that unhealthy eating choices can lead to disrupted brain connections that lead to weakened brain performance, which can lead to making more unhealthy choices.

In other words, it?s a vicious cycle.

A second study, presented by Dr. Tony Goldstone, showed the brain?s orbitfrontal cortex may play a big role in how people make food choices. This area encodes the ?value? of a food, Goldstone said ? i.e. how rewarding or pleasurable it will be to eat.

Study participants were asked to fast overnight. In the morning they were given a breakfast of about 700 calories and shown photos of food while hooked up to an MRI machine. They were asked to fast again before another visit; the following morning they were not given breakfast and then shown the same photos.

Belfast judge: Gay, unmarried couples can adopt

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Unmarried and same-sex couples in Northern Ireland should be allowed to adopt children, a Belfast judge ruled Thursday, overturning a 1987 adoption law that discriminated against both groups.

Gay rights activists praised the ruling in favor of a lawsuit pursued by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. But Health Minister Edwin Poots, an evangelical Protestant opposed to gay partnerships, said the government would appeal.

Belfast High Court Justice Seamus Treacy ruled that the law clearly violated European human rights laws on privacy and discrimination.

Other parts of the United Kingdom already permit gay and unmarried heterosexual couples to adopt children. But Northern Ireland's law restricted applicants to married couples and single adults, including homosexuals.

Northern Ireland's chief commissioner for human rights, Michael O'Flaherty, said the successful lawsuit "sought to protect the best interests of the child. Given the high numbers of children in care, who need a family in Northern Ireland, the importance of this case in widening the pool of prospective parents cannot be overstated."

More than 2,500 children in Northern Ireland are in state care awaiting adoption.

John O'Doherty, director of a Northern Ireland gay rights group called the Rainbow Project, denounced the government plans to appeal the judgment as "wasting public money on a fool's errand."

He accused Poots of "allowing his personal prejudices to influence his public responsibilities."

Northern Ireland, like the rest of the UK, legalized civil partnerships for gay people in 2005. Two years later Britain devolved most government powers to a cross-community government of British Protestants and Irish Catholics, most of them religious conservatives.

Small Business Marketing Gangnam Style!

If you like this post, please say thanks by sharing it!

Small Business Marketing Gangnam Style!

Unless you have been living in a hole or or you have head your head buried in the sand for a few weeks, it?s been pretty impossible to miss the phenomenon that is the Korean music ?star? PSY?s Gangnam Style hit song!

Please don?t ask me what it is or what it means but if you haven?t seen it, I?ve added his video to the bottom of this post? please don?t get too excited or embarrass yourself by attempting to do the dance in the office? ?believe me, they never let you forget it? errr? ok, well maybe that was just me!

gangnam style small business marketing

Small Business marketing Gangnam Style

In case you haven?t seen it, the Korean music star pops some hilarious dance moves while wearing his trademark sunglasses, tuxedo and loafers and has enjoyed global fame since his video?s release. In fact check these stats?

As of October 17, 2012, the music video has been viewed over 480 million times on YouTube and is the site?s 7th most watched video!

This goes to show how much websites like YouTube are an integral part of our daily lives and just how they can explode with videos going viral across the globe. Justin Bieber shot to stardom through it. So did PSY, who was previously only popular in his home country of Korea.

If you think how big Gangnam style is thanks to youtube, surely this shows how vital video marketing is on probably a much smaller scale, to small business owners and marketers.

When it comes to marketing, using video and sites like YouTube gives everyone a level playing field to compete on, whether you are a sole trader or a multi-national business. ?Videos help you build not only stronger relationships but they help you do it significantly quicker too!

It can be used to build much stronger relationships with your clients and prospects if you are prepared to stand in front of a camera and talk? not something everybody is comfortable with I know, but if you can do it, you definitely make a bigger impact and grow your reputation.

Of course there are other ways you can get your message out there with video. You can create powerpoint presentations and then play them and speak over the presentation, just using a cheap microphone like this one from Amazon. ?Use a free screen service like Screenr and you are away and making videos!

Create your own Youtube channel and upload your videos!?Of course you need to get metaphorical ?bums on seats? so you need to tell people you?ve made a video and uploaded it to youtube?

Here?s a quick tip? Youtube, like Google likes to show videos that are popular and the more popular they are and the speed in which they get views is vitally important. So, when you are ready to upload a video, make sure you have a strategy in place that you can immediately roll out to get views. So do this?.

  1. Make your video and have it ready to upload to Youtube
  2. Write an email and a blogpost explaining the content of your video and what people can learn from it and have it ready to send out
  3. Upload your video, add the youtube link to your email campaign and immediately send the email to your database.
  4. Then instantly share the video on all your other social media channels like facebook and twitter
  5. Add the video to your blog and publish it

If you do all these things at once and you get views quickly, youtube will see it?s popular and push it up the rankings, resulting in even more views!

Here are a few pointers for a successful video marketing campaign:

1. Like everything in your marketing, what is of upmost importance is the quality of your content! Try and make your videos and the ideas you include to be catchy, unique and interesting. Encourage people to share and give people something interesting to talk about with their friends.

2. Ensure you are consistent in the messages and the core values to present. This is all part of your brand and reputation that will help you build a community and a following.

3. To make sure you connect with the viewers of your videos, make them personal, honest and ensure you maintain integrity? talk about what you know about in a personal way that communicates your personality. Be genuine as people will see straight through you if you pretend to be something you are not! They should feel that your videos add value and really help them and definitely don?t just sell! Of course you can add calles to action in appropriate place but if you make it all about selling you will turn people off!

4. Like all social media, interract with people who comment. Always try and reply and converse with people and obviously a good way of getting ideas for future videos is to ask people to add questions that you can respond to with more videos.

So ultimately, if you are not using video marketing as part of your small business marketing strategy, then just give it a go!

See how easy it is to be a success? if PSY can do it with Gangnam Style, then so can YOU!

Check his video out below to see what all the fuss is about? and as always, leave your comments at the foot of this post!
