When we rounded up the most significant rumors about the iPad 3, the next generation of Apple's popular tablet, we suggested that it seems likely that the product will be announced in the first week of March.?A new report supports that theory.

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski explains that?sources tell him that Apple "has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events."?The event, Paczkowski, writes will be held in San Francisco, "presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple?s preferred location for big announcements like these."

Paczkowski's sources did not provide any details as to when the next-generation iPad will become available, but he offers a guess which matches our own ??which is that the?device will begin shipping about a week after the announcement.

So what will the iPad 3?? or whatever Apple chooses to name the device?? be like? Faster and stronger, but not particularly better-looking than its predecessor, says?Paczkowski:

As for the next-generation iPad itself, sources say it will be pretty much what we?ve been led to expect by the innumerable reports leading up to its release: A device similar in form factor to the iPad 2, but running a much faster chip, sporting an improved graphics processing unit, and featuring a 2048?1536 Retina Display ? or something close to it.

While information provided by sources can often be miles from the truth, the details listed in?Paczkowski's report match some of the most persistent iPad 3 rumors. On top of that, the AllThingsD writer has a solid track record when it comes to sniffing out Apple event timing.

So while every rumor or report which is based on mysterious, unnamed sources should be taken with some salt, we have a hunch that the odds are good that this one will pan out.
