How to Deal with Common Pests in the Home | Pest Control | TH ...

Our homes are warm, dry environments that can offer the perfect haven for a number of pests.? Don?t worry if you are affected by common household pets.? This does not mean your home is dirty or poorly maintained.

Any home can be affected by pests and fortunately there are a number of safe and effective methods to deal with these unwanted house invaders.

Insect Control

Insects can be a problem for homeowners all around the world. In most cases they are more annoying than they are harmful such as flies and gnats.? However some insects such as ants, wasps and fleas can prove a more serious problem.

  • You can buy a number of insect pesticides over the counter.? You do need to make sure you are using them properly so read the manufacturer?s instructions carefully.
  • Large infestations will need to be dealt with by professional exterminators.? They will have the equipment and supplies needed to deal with large infestations effectively.
  • If you have pets then fleas can be particularly difficult to get rid of.? You will need to use the best flea control for your pets which in most cases is only available from your vets.
  • This will take care of the source of the fleas.? Then you can work on removing the flea infestation from your home using a combination of flea bombs to treat whole rooms and also flea sprays on cracks and crevices.

Rodent Control

Rats and mice are very shy creatures so you may not actually see them.? However you can tell if they have infested your home by the droppings they leave.? You do need to deal promptly with rodent infestations as these creatures breed very quickly and can spread disease and germs.

  • The first step is to identify how the rodents are accessing your property.? This could be through gaps in brickwork or under doorways.? Block these routes to help prevent access in the future.
  • Now you need to make sure you clear up any waste or food that could be attracting these creatures.? For example they may be raiding your cupboards and gnawing through cardboard packaging to get at the food inside.? By transferring food into clean air tight plastic containers you can block off this food source.
  • They could also be enjoying the refuse on your compost heap.? Transfer this compost to a sealed compost bin to remove access.
  • If you only have a few mice or rats in your home then over-the-counter traps can be very effective.? These traps are commonly baited with food mixed with rodenticide.? You do need to make sure you keep these traps away from children or pets.
  • If you don?t like the thought of killing the rodents then you can buy humane traps.? These will trap the rodents live so that you can release them somewhere else.? Make sure you release the rodents a few miles from your home into a non-residential area otherwise they could find their way back again.
  • You may need help from professional exterminators if you have a larger infestation that has got out of control.
