10 years later, Olympic champs return to Salt Lake ? Artesia News

The lavender dress Sarah Hughes wore for the long program is in a museum, and her Olympic gold medal is tucked away for safekeeping.

Her memories of the Salt Lake City Games, however, are always with her.

?When they said 10 years, I was kind of blown away,? the 2002 Olympic champion said. ?In my mind I can remember everything as if it was just yesterday. But at the same time, it feels like a different lifetime because my life is so different now. I was a child then, I was 16.?

Hughes is returning to Salt Lake City on Saturday night for a ?Stars on Ice? show celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Winter Games. Also appearing are Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, in their first trip back to the Olympic arena since they were caught up in the judging scandal that rocked the Salt Lake City Games.

Sasha Cohen, the silver medalist in Turin, and Olympic champions Ekaterina Gordeeva and Ilia Kulik also are part of the show.

?I assume it?s going to be excellent memories because I have only excellent memories of the Olympics,? Pelletier said. ?Even though I?m not a nostalgic person, I?m very much looking forward to it.?

Though Hughes had won the bronze medal at the 2001 world championships, her gold in Salt Lake City remains one of the sport?s great upsets.

In fourth place after the short program, the teenager still had a slim chance of winning a medal. But gold? Few outside her family would have predicted that. Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya, the gold and silver medalists at three of the previous four world championships, were in front of her, as was Cohen. Hughes would have to be spectacular, and all three would have to make mistakes.

With all the focus ? and pressure ? on everyone else, Hughes took the ice with a carefree air, so loose she actually laughed when the audience greeted her with a roar. She breezed through the technical elements of her program, doing not one, but two triple-triple combinations, and seven triple jumps in all. She was so light on her blades she seemed to float across the ice, and she skated with the joy of someone alone in an empty rink.

She was so dazzling that her coach, Robin Wagner, bounced up and down as if on a trampoline for the last 15 seconds of the program. Fans were on their feet, too, getting louder with every second. When Hughes finished, she doubled over with glee and clapped her hands.

?When you hit the mark, when the dice rolls onto the winning numbers, it?s like you hit the lottery,? Hughes said.

With four skaters left, Hughes and Wagner headed back to the locker room to wait. Kwan two-footed a triple toe loop in combination, and fell on a triple flip. Slutskaya skated conservatively, and didn?t even try any of the triple-triple combinations that had become her trademark.

When the final marks were posted, showing Hughes in first, Wagner wrapped Hughes in such a big hug it pulled both of them off a bench and onto the floor. The shrieks of joy could be heard clear into the arena.

?It was a dream come true. I couldn?t have wished or hoped for anything better,? said Hughes, who graduated from Yale in 2009. ?A lot of times, when I think about it, it still seems surreal. But it makes me feel proud, it makes me feel happy. It fulfilled a lot of my goals and dreams in skating.?

Sale and Pelletier?s gold medal was equally hard won, though in an entirely different manner.

Russia?s Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze initially were awarded the gold over Sale and Pelletier by the slightest of margins, despite Sikharulidze?s step-out on a double axel. There was a howl of protest on television and in the stands, and Sale and Pelletier wept as they stood on the medals podium and listened to the Russian anthem.

But judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne told fellow judges afterward that she had been pressured by French federation president Didier Gailhaguet to put the Russians first. She later recanted, but the damage was done. With the scandal threatening to overshadow the rest of the Olympics, the decision was made to award Sale and Pelletier duplicate gold medals.

?I made my peace with it that night,? Pelletier said. ?The joy of having it done and having it well done that night, the joy of skating great that night under that much pressure, overshined the fact that we came in second.?

(AP) ? Israel accused Iran of waging a covert campaign of state terror that stretched this week from the Middle East to the heart of Asia after a bungled series of explosions led to the capture of two Iranian nationals in Bangkok.

Authorities in Israel ratcheted up security at home and abroad following Tuesday's explosions in the Thai capital, escalating a confrontation over Iran's suspect nuclear program and raising fears of war.

On Monday, an Israeli diplomat's wife and driver were wounded in New Delhi when a bomb stuck to their minivan exploded, and another device was defused on an Israeli Embassy car in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Israel has threatened military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, and Iran has blamed the Jewish state for the recent killings of Iranian atomic scientists.

Iran denied responsibility for the New Delhi and Georgia attacks, which appeared to mirror the killings of the Iranian scientists that used "sticky bombs."

Four Thai civilians were wounded in Bangkok after a cache of explosives ignited at a house, apparently by mistake. One explosion blew off the leg of an Iranian who had fled, carrying what looked like grenades.

When police searched the Iranians' home, the bomb squad found and defused two explosives, each made of three or four pounds of C-4 explosives inside a pair of radios. National Police Chief Gen. Prewpan Damapong said the bombs were "magnetic" and could be stuck on vehicles.

The wounded Iranian was in police custody at a Bangkok hospital. Immigration police detained a second Iranian as he tried to board a flight for Malaysia.

Both men were facing four charges including possession of explosives, attempted murder, attempted murder of a policeman and causing explosions that damaged property, Prewpan said.

Security forces were searching for a third Iranian suspect.

Israel's Channel 10 TV quoted unidentified Thai authorities as saying the captured Iranians confessed to targeting Israeli interests. The site of the blast is more than three miles (5 kilometers) away from the Israeli Embassy.

There was no comment from Iranian officials in Tehran on Tuesday's series of explosions in Thailand.

Thai government spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng said "we need more analysis" to determine who was behind the attack and whether Iran was involved. She refused to comment on what the Iranians might have been planning or whether targets had been identified.

There seemed to be no doubt in the minds of Israeli officials, who blamed Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah.

"The attempted terrorist attack in Bangkok proves once again that Iran and its proxies continue to perpetrate terror," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in Singapore. "The recent terror attacks are yet another example of this."

Iran and Hezbollah are "unrelenting terror elements endangering the stability of the region and endangering the stability of the world," added Barak, who was in Bangkok on Sunday, according to Israel's Defense Ministry.

Added Israeli Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, in an interview with Israel Radio: "We know who carried out the terror attacks, we know who sent them, and Israel will settle the score with them."

On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had thwarted attacks in recent months in Azerbaijan, Thailand and unspecified other countries.

In Israel, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security was heightened at public places, foreign embassies and offices, as well as Ben-Gurion International Airport.

The first blast in Bangkok ripped off part of the roof of an explosives-filled house where the three Iranians were staying, police said.

Surveillance video from just after that blast showed separate images of each suspect walking down the middle of a residential street.

One man ? identified by police as Saeid Moradi ? could be seen wearing a baseball cap and a dark jacket. He carried a large backpack over one shoulder and what appeared to be two portable transistor radios ? one in each hand.

"He tried to wave down a taxi ... and the driver refused to take him," Police Gen. Pansiri Prapawat said. Moradi responded by hurling an explosive device ? possibly a grenade ? that partially destroyed the taxi and wounded its driver.

Police then tried to apprehend Moradi on a nearby street. He hurled a grenade at them, "but somehow it bounced back" and blew off his leg, Pansiri said.

Photos of Moradi showed him lying on a sidewalk strewn with broken glass in front of a primary and secondary school. Hospital officials said his right leg was sheared off below the knee, while his left leg was severely mangled.

Police said a second Iranian, Mohummad Hazaei, was detained at Bangkok's international airport; he had been seen in the closed-circuit TV video also carrying a large backpack. He wore sunglasses, a T-shirt, pants and tennis shoes.

The third Iranian, dressed in camouflage shorts, carried nothing.

Three Thai men and one Thai woman were wounded and treated at a hospital, said Dr. Suwinai Busarakamwong.

Authorities are trying to trace Moradi's movements. Initial reports indicated he arrived in Thailand from Seoul, South Korea, on Feb. 8, Pansiri said, landing at the southern resort of Phuket, and staying several nights in a hotel in Chonburi, a couple hours drive southeast of Bangkok.

A bomb disposal unit checked a dark backpack near the spot where Moradi fell and police found Iranian currency, U.S. dollars and Thai money, Pansiri said.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called on people "not to panic" and said the situation was under control.

The U.S. condemned the blasts. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland didn't blame Iran directly, but noted Monday's incidents in India and Georgia, and recent "Iranian-sponsored" and "Hezbollah-linked" plots to attack Israeli and Western interests in Azerbaijan and Thailand.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that the U.S. has common cause with Israel and the international community to ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon. He said the U.S. and other nations have taken strong steps with sanctions and stressed the importance of keeping the international community together.

Panetta said he doesn't think Israel has made a decision to launch a military strike on Iran to thwart its nuclear ambitions.

Last month in Thailand, a Lebanese-Swedish man with alleged links to pro-Iranian Hezbollah militants was detained by Thai police. He led authorities to a warehouse filled with more than 8,800 pounds (4,000 kilograms) of urea fertilizer and several gallons of liquid ammonium nitrate.

Israel and the United States at the time warned their citizens to be alert in the capital. Thai authorities said Thailand appeared to have been a staging ground but not the target of any attack. U.S. Embassy officials at the time, however, said intelligence indicated that attacks were planned in the capital and Thai media reported the attacks were aimed at Israeli targets in Bangkok, including the Israeli Embassy.

Pansiri, the senior Thai police officer, said that "so far, we haven't found any links between these two cases."

Thailand has rarely been a target for international terrorists, but its main airport is a major hub for Asian air travel and its government ? heavily reliant on tourism ? is tolerant of foreigners and is often accused of corruption and graft.

Since 2004, it has faced domestic Muslim insurgency, but violence has traditionally been limited to the country's three southernmost provinces.

Israeli media reported that Mossad teams are in Bangkok and New Delhi to investigate the explosions.

How to Prevent Trademark Infringement ... - Raw Business Law

law_scale_background.jpg

Patent infringement can be considered as theft of an invention, idea or improvements that have been submitted to the U.S. Patent Office, with a granted timeline of acceptable overlap of one year.

The U.S. Patent Office is responsible to determine to grant or not the application for patent on the basis of information given by the applicant. Using a company or individual registered trademark without authority is a trade mark infringement. A Trademark is a sign or symbol used to differentiate a company or individualfrom another, such as the RCA uses specific dogin a specific position as their Trademark.

Anyorganization which wants to use a dog as their trademark can do so without being guilty of trademark infringement if they use different kind of dog or use that same dog in a different use to those in respect of which the RCA dog is a registered trademark.

Trademark infringement is as serious as patent infringement. Trademarks are the symbol of recognition,on which companies hope that public will acknowledge the quality and buy the product, based on recognition.Trademark infringement is profit infringement, and if infringement of trademark is suspected, it is in a company or anyone?s interest to contact a trademark lawyer. A trademark lawyer can help you out to start an investigation and determine whether a trademark infringement occurred or not. With the help of a trademark lawyer, a company or individual can obtain legal support if they choose to make a legal claim of trademark infringement. A trademark attorney can obviously do the same for a patent infringement.

The difference between a violation of the patent and trademark infringement is the nature of the idea that is copied. Brand infringement refers to the copying or theft of an invention in itself, while a trademark infringement relates to the copying or theft of an icon, a symbol, or even a special set of letters. A trademark lawyer can help a company or an individual with both cases.

The U.S. Patent Office is accountableto maintain and keep records of all patents and trademarks, which is a searchable database of registered patents and trademarks.

To obtain a legal basis for infringement of patent or Infringement of trade marks, the U.S. Patent Office must have a record of the original filing of the patent or trademark. Its has become quite easy to get through the U.S. patent office records, with the development in Internet and search engines

These tools have removed any excuse of ignorance of an infringement or violation of patents, while at the same time enhancing the ability of an inventor in search of trademark infringement and patents infringement. It doesnt need a trade mark lawyer to search the database, as anyone can do it easily consume a little time and energy on internet.Once the original patent or trademark registration is determined, a trademark lawyer then can follow some basic steps to determine the reality of patent infringement or trademark infringement.

This means that the lawyer will probably draft a legal letter to the company stating that the company is in violation of trademark infringement uk laws or patent infringement laws, and they should immediately stop and discontinue the use of current trademark or patent.

The company then has a choice to make if they are corrected immediately after the warning letter, or they may choose to fight the idea that they are guilty of any infringement of a trademark or patent infringement.Or they can go to U.S. Patent office to determine if they are wrong, or if the inventor or company brand is mistaken in his statement. If the investigation of the U.S. Patent Office showsthat they are in violation of trade mark infringement or patent infringement law and they do not immediately cease and desist, the trademark lawyer may recommend filing a complaint.

The trademark lawyer may well recommend the company to sue, regardless of companys further action, in order toseek a settlement offer for any marketing or promotion damage may have occurred while the illegal activities were in violation of law of Infringement in trade mark and patent infringement law.

Trademarks infringement and patent infringement may be difficult to demonstrate in every detail, especially if the infringement was done intentionally or accidentally. Still, intent does play a role in shaping the outcome of a law suit, ignorance doesnt plea the action. One would expect a reduction in the trade mark infringement and patent infringement cases as the United StatesPatent Office documents are now easier than ever to find, but it seems that the cases of the trade mark infringement and patent infringementare rising instead of falling.

How to Deal with Common Pests in the Home | Pest Control | TH ...

Our homes are warm, dry environments that can offer the perfect haven for a number of pests.? Don?t worry if you are affected by common household pets.? This does not mean your home is dirty or poorly maintained.

Any home can be affected by pests and fortunately there are a number of safe and effective methods to deal with these unwanted house invaders.

Insect Control

Insects can be a problem for homeowners all around the world. In most cases they are more annoying than they are harmful such as flies and gnats.? However some insects such as ants, wasps and fleas can prove a more serious problem.

  • You can buy a number of insect pesticides over the counter.? You do need to make sure you are using them properly so read the manufacturer?s instructions carefully.
  • Large infestations will need to be dealt with by professional exterminators.? They will have the equipment and supplies needed to deal with large infestations effectively.
  • If you have pets then fleas can be particularly difficult to get rid of.? You will need to use the best flea control for your pets which in most cases is only available from your vets.
  • This will take care of the source of the fleas.? Then you can work on removing the flea infestation from your home using a combination of flea bombs to treat whole rooms and also flea sprays on cracks and crevices.

Rodent Control

Rats and mice are very shy creatures so you may not actually see them.? However you can tell if they have infested your home by the droppings they leave.? You do need to deal promptly with rodent infestations as these creatures breed very quickly and can spread disease and germs.

  • The first step is to identify how the rodents are accessing your property.? This could be through gaps in brickwork or under doorways.? Block these routes to help prevent access in the future.
  • Now you need to make sure you clear up any waste or food that could be attracting these creatures.? For example they may be raiding your cupboards and gnawing through cardboard packaging to get at the food inside.? By transferring food into clean air tight plastic containers you can block off this food source.
  • They could also be enjoying the refuse on your compost heap.? Transfer this compost to a sealed compost bin to remove access.
  • If you only have a few mice or rats in your home then over-the-counter traps can be very effective.? These traps are commonly baited with food mixed with rodenticide.? You do need to make sure you keep these traps away from children or pets.
  • If you don?t like the thought of killing the rodents then you can buy humane traps.? These will trap the rodents live so that you can release them somewhere else.? Make sure you release the rodents a few miles from your home into a non-residential area otherwise they could find their way back again.
  • You may need help from professional exterminators if you have a larger infestation that has got out of control.

Writers' Remedies: Help! How do I Write my First Screenplay?

You might have a great idea for a screenplay to the point you can visualize the story unreeling in your head. But how do you put the story into a screenplay format? Here are the beginners? tips to writing your first screenplay.

How to Write a Script, the Basics

Conceiving a great idea for a screenplay is only the beginning of the creative journey. The writer will need to know how to put the ideas down, what to put in, what to leave out, how to format the dialogue, how to express scene transitions and action descriptions. And all with the three-act structure supporting the story. Obviously, a blank Word document is not the way to go. The screenplay should be properly formatted. You can get free screenwriting software for a variety of formats, including TV dramas, feature length films (for US and UK formats) and even soaps from BBC Writersroom. You have a choice of two screenwriting programmes, which are Scriptsmart, or the more advanced Scriptsmart Gold.

Free Screenwriting Software for the Beginner

Follow the onscreen instructions to upload BBC?s Scriptsmart and get familiar with the programme, which is pretty easy to follow. You will find that by opening a document, Scriptsmart will format the page with certain paragraph settings and spaces that are used for scene headings, paragraphs and dialogue within the screenplay. Such prescriptive page settings ensure that each page will equal a certain amount of time: a page of film script equals a minute in film time. The ideal screenplay should be therefore be between 80 and 120 pages long. The first page will show the title of the screenplay in caps, the writer?s contact details (email, etc) will be exhibited on the lower left corner.

Screenwriting Basics in Formatting

The screenplay is really a blend of two elements: speech and action scenes. So when conceiving a screenplay, I will usually put these down in a notebook. You may research into the characters? backgrounds right down to their childhoods and families as well as what they are thinking as the scenes unravel. But unlike novels, none of this back-story should be present in the actual screenplay. The skill of making apparent what the characters are feeling through what is on screen alone, might take some getting used to. When it comes to screenwriting, show and don?t tell really comes into its own. So only what is seen and heard on the screen should be on the screenplay. Nothing else.

How do I Open the Screenplay?

Every screenplay should begin with a FADE IN which is the opening of the first scene. Each scene should open with a ?slugine? which is expressed in caps. A slugline is in three parts: whether the scene is inside or outdoors (exterior or interior), which is expressed as EXT. or INT. This is followed by the location of the scene, which might be in a car or office. The third part is time of day, usually DAY or NIGHT, although EVENING or AFTERNOON can be used. If a scene follows in a continuous fashion then CONT. can be used. An example of a slugline, therefore might be: INT. GERALD?S OFFICE ? DAY

Rather than use the same slugline repeatedly if two scenes occur in the same place, you can put THE SAME ? LATER (or CONTINUOUS) if only the timeframe shifts.

Every slugline should be followed with an action description which informs on what the characters (if any) are doing and their locations, which might be, ?Anne is standing by the window reading a letter. Gerald enters. He appears worried.? And this illustrates the next crucial point. Every action description should be expressed in the present tense. Action descriptions should ideally be pithy and to the point. Don?t include lengthy descriptive passages. Break each action sequence into ?beats? of no more than 4 lines long. Be as brief and to the point as possible with action descriptions.

Dialogue Formatting for Film

Each morsel of dialogue should be headed with a character name, again in caps. The dialogue itself has a shorter line length than the action description and centred beneath the character name. A choice of speech qualifiers (in brackets beneath the character name) can be used to describe how the dialogue is to be delivered, which might be (V.O.) voiceover, (Into phone) speaking into the phone or (O.S.) off screen (if the character speaking is not visible on camera). Others can be used, such as (sardonically) or (sharply). Use these qualifiers sparingly. Let what is said reflect how it should be delivered.

How to Use Montages and Series of Shots

Rather than employ a series of sluglines to express a succession of short scenes, you can use a ?series of shots?. This is headed with SERIES OF SHOTS, slugline-like, and beneath a series of brief descriptions lettered A), B) and C) etc will be seen. An example of a series of shots might look like this:

SERIES OF SHOTS

A) Suzie walks up a street
B) Suzie enters an office block
C) Inside the office, Suzie strides up the stairwell.
D) Suzie walks through a door. Gerald greets her and they shake hands.

A Montage is formatted identically to a series of shots, but is headed MONTAGE instead. A montage is really a means of conveying a mood or atmosphere via a series of scenes, such as a busy day at work or moments of grief after a child loses her mother.

What does a Screenplay Look Like?

Really, a screenplay will contain a smattering of words with lots of white space, headed with a series of sluglines in caps, and character cues in caps. Dialogue and descriptions will be expressed in upper/lower case, where the dialogue will exhibit shorter line lengths. A good idea is to take a look at other screenplays, which can be viewed online for free.

How do I Make the Film Script Work?

The final act of the screenplay will FADE OUT. But really, this is the beginning, as every screenplay will need drafting and redrafting. The writer should get familiar with the elements of a screenplay such as the three act structure, the story hook and the point of no return. Such story elements will help the screenwriter plot pivotal points within the screenplay story for optimum effect. Links to articles describing these elements can be found below. Finally, depending on how you are submitting your screenplay, you can either save it as a PDF for online submissions, or carefully brad the 100 or so pages together within a flexible wallet for the post. Make sure the finished screenplay is pristine and perfect.

Advice for Beginning a Screenplay

But of course, drafting and redrafting the screenplay will often be necessary. The initial stage is a fairly organic process, where notebooks and pencils will be needed. Once putting words into the screenplay document, you can really begin to see how the storyline might unfold through action scenes and dialogue. But don?t submit until you have weeded out: typos, stereotypes, scenes that serve no purpose, areas without conflict, clich?d paragraphs, wordy dialogue and literary prose.

One of the best ways of moving the script forward is to put it into a bottom drawer for a few weeks and reading it afresh. Alternatively, get a trusted friend to give impartial feedback. More about improving the screenplay can be found on the links below.
