A Ray of Hope

Every day until the election, Slate will offer up one reason to be optimistic for your candidate.

Today?s Good News for Obama: At Slate, we?ve talked a lot about how much the presidential candidates are spending on ads. But who?s getting more bang for his buck? President Obama?s ads are more effective in changing voters? preferences, according to a recent study. While Mitt Romney?s ads had little effect on his support, respondents who watched Obama?s ads preferred Obama over Romney 48 percent to 39 percent. And voters who saw both Romney and Obama ads preferred Obama by a 48-41 margin. The study also tested the ?Disappointed? ad produced by the super PAC Americans for Prosperity. Male voters who watched the ad supported Romney by 1 percent more than the control group, but there was a 5 point drop in female voter support for Romney. It turns out Romney?s ads aren?t helping him much?and they might actually be hurting him.

Aggressive or annoying? Some find debate too rude

WASHINGTON (AP) ? This is presidential? They bicker, interrupt, talk over the moderator.

To some, the Obama-Romney rematch was squirm-inducing. But shedding some dignity probably won't cost the candidates much. Since both President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney came out swinging, neither was likely to claim a decisive advantage among viewers who thought the debate smacked of the wrong type of reality TV. And many backers who were already lined up on the two sides of the super-heated race were looking for a scrappy face-off.

"In the world of 'The Real Housewives,' everybody needs to turn over a table from time to time," said Evan Cornog, dean of the Communications School at Hofstra University, where Tuesday night's debate took place. "How good that is for the republic, I don't know."

The presidency isn't a person, it's an institution. And Americans traditionally expect presidents seeking re-election to maintain a certain level of decorum. Challengers get more leeway but still are expected to pay deference to the office of chief executive, if not to the man. Maybe that tradition is doomed in a conflict-addicted popular culture where even television cooking shows are "throwdowns."

Can the notion of the dignity of office survive the era of flash analysis, when a phrase like "binders full of women" launches a thousand Internet jokes ? while the debate's still in progress ? and campaigns spin the matchup into attack ads within hours?

The tone of Tuesday's faceoff was embraced by Democrats who were dismayed by Obama's dreary performance in the first of this year's three debates. They had urged him to adopt a more brass-knuckles style.

When Obama stepped up to meet Romney's hard-charging persona, the result was a presidential campaign matchup that stands out as one of the most rancorous on live TV, especially for an event in which the candidates were onstage with everyday folks, fielding their earnest questions. Whether that was good or bad, it was one of the most exciting to watch.

Romney turned to the president and posed his own accusatory questions, demanding answers. When Romney made a point, Obama would shoot back, "Governor, that's not true." Six times he declared Romney's words "not true."

Maribeth McCarthy of Alexandria, Va., said watching the back-and-forth left her wishing that moderator Candy Crowley could bang a giant gong whenever someone fibbed.

"I don't understand how it's right for people to call each other liars on stage," said McCarthy, a vice president at a financial institution, who said she expects to vote for Obama but wasn't happy with either candidate in the debate. "How on earth would we know who's right?"

Texas A&M associate professor Jennifer Mercieca, who tuned in as part of her job, felt a similar distaste.

"Every time they would talk over each other or talk over the moderator, for me, it was cringe-worthy," said Mercieca, who studies presidential communications. "It was unpleasant to see."

Fidel "Butch" Montoya, a Denver pastor still mulling his vote, said the debate did seem less presidential but he liked watching the candidates "going face to face, nose to nose."

"I enjoyed it because I think too often debates are cold, a waste of time," said Montoya, who's leaning toward Romney but waiting for the final debate to make up his mind.

Alan Schroeder, a journalism professor at Northeastern University who wrote a book on presidential debates, said plenty of them over the years have been downright dull ? and this one was lively, even when it ran over the scheduled 90 minutes. So there's nothing wrong with turning up the heat a bit, he suggests.

"I think debates should be entertaining," he said. "It's political theater."

Debates traditionally are better at energizing a candidate's supporters, at building voter turnout, than they are at changing minds or reaching the elusive undecided voters, Schroeder said.

In theory, Tuesday's event was focused on the narrow sliver of undecideds. The questions came from among a pool of 82 voters chosen specifically because they still called themselves uncommitted to either candidate three weeks before Election Day.

"It was for a town hall debate particularly aggressive," Schroeder said. "There's always a risk involved in that. Because the people in the audience are there to hear their questions answered, not to watch a struggle between the two candidates."

But Schroeder felt the candidates didn't go too far: "It was sharp, but it was never out of bounds."

The candidates made a point of looking their questioners in the eye, calling them by name and voicing sympathy for their concerns. But over and over, Obama or Romney quickly pivoted from addressing a voter to assailing the other fellow. Often they talked right through their time limits.

At one point Crowley implored Romney to shorten his answer: "Do you see all these people?" she said. "They've been waiting for you."

At another moment ? with Romney trying to make a point about investment in China by asking Obama over and again, "Have you looked at your pension?" ? Crowley firmly asked the former Massachusetts governor to sit down.

It's probably too early to say whether Tuesday's show and the fiery vice presidential faceoff between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan might signal a more aggressive style of political debate for a coarsening American culture.

"What does this foretell?" Cornog asked. "Is it a trend? Or is it just an artifact of Romney's Hail Mary pass in the first debate, and the president's people deciding they have to match that strategy?"

Plenty of viewers found the event "too rude," Cornog said, but there won't be many consequences for Romney or Obama, so long as both are perceived as equal offenders.

"If you didn't like it," he said. "You really don't have any place to go as a voter."

Continuing our path of Tech Savviness with Google Plus | Saint ...

Continuing our path of Tech Savviness with Google Plus

The latest thing we have been learning about and experimenting with here at Hermann London is google plus. It seems like it is a mix between facebook, gotomeeting, google local, twitter, evite, etc all in one.

So we started by creating personal pages, which was easy. Then adding all of the people we know into different circles. The point of the different circles is that if I wanted only my ?friends? to see an update about the killer weekend I had, its possible to only share that with the people in my friend circle. If we wanted to post about the newest real estate technology we have been using, we would share that with only the people in our ?real estate? circle. Etc. Now that we have a personal page, we are moving on to creating a company page. Tying it in with our google local account that we have been using for years, and making our company have a presence on google plus. We can also make our companies website link to google plus as well, through something like this: Find us on Google+
Next we started discovering the options of the google hangout. Its more than just a video chat, its actually a group video chat, a screen share, and much more. We have been experimenting with ?hanging out? with people from across the country and world who are all also still learning about the hangouts. There are already websites out there listing different hangouts and it looks like you can join hangouts across the world covering different topics. We will be taking part in a hangout today that is made up of Realtors from across the country that work with veterans and VA loans. We will be sharing with each other the different technologies and tools we use to get business done.
We occasionally work with clients who are unable to travel to St. Louis regularly to view properties. That makes selecting a property a challenge for the buyer, but it also makes us a little uncomfortable, because when we help someone buy a house we really want to make sure it?s the right house for them. Google hangouts will allow us to walk through the home and really do a ?virtual open house? in a lot of ways. It will allow us to meet with our agents who live farther away from our office and don?t want to make the drive in just for a few minutes of personal time. We are looking forward to continued learning about google plus and all that it offers. If you are a realtor, buyer, or seller and you want to integrate technology into your real estate process, I think Hermann London agents are a great resource for you. Lets ?hangout? today.

Michigan Humanities Council Awarded Two Grants Totaling $110000

LANSING? The Michigan Humanities Council has been awarded two grants totaling $110,000 from the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs (MCACA). The grant funds will be used to support two programs produced in partnership between the councils ? the Arts & Humanities Touring Program and Poetry Out Loud.

?The Michigan Humanities Council and Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs enjoy a unique partnership,? said Robbe DiPietro, acting executive director for the Humanities Council. ?Our cooperation has enabled us to provide two powerful programs, reaching communities throughout the state and integrating arts and humanities into our culture and livelihood.

?The Humanities Council has been working diligently to increase the number of high school students participating in Poetry Out Loud and to bring more quality performing arts to schools, libraries and festivals across the state. With critical funding from MCACA and individual donors, corporations and foundations, we are ensuring that more Michigan children and adults have an opportunity to experience and benefit from humanities programs.?

The first grant, totaling $60,000, will be re-granted for the Arts & Humanities Touring Program. The program, which features a juried directory of Michigan?s top arts and humanities performers, awards grants to nonprofit organizations in order to offset the cost of bringing these performers into their communities.

The second grant, totaling $50,000, will be split between administrative and directory costs of the Touring program, and implementation of Poetry Out Loud. Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation competition for high school students. Each participating school hosts a competition and sends their winner to the statewide competition. The state champion receives an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the national championship in Washington, D.C., and the chance to win a $20,000 college scholarship.

This grant award by the MCACA is a portion of $6.1 million the organization will distribute in 2013 to art agencies with regional, state and local missions.

Uruguay poised to legalize abortion

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) ? Uruguay's congress appeared ready on Tuesday to legalize abortion, a groundbreaking move in Latin America, where no country save Cuba has made abortions accessible to all women during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Compromises made to secure votes disappointed both sides of the abortion divide, which gathered in protest. Once it gets through Uruguay's lower house, the measure would go back to the Senate for approval of changes, but President Jose Mujica has said he will allow it to become law.

The measure would give women the right to a legal abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and decriminalize later-term abortions when the mother's life is at risk or when the fetus is so deformed that it wouldn't survive after birth. In cases of rape, abortions would be legal during the first 14 weeks.

The goal is to reduce the number of illegal abortions in Uruguay, Congressman Ivan Posada of the center-left Independent Party told his fellow lawmakers Tuesday. Posada wrote the measure and is expected to provide a key 50th vote against the opposition of 49 other lawmakers.

"They talk of 30,000 a year, a hypothetical number, but whatever the number is, it's quite dramatic for a country where 47,000 children are born each year," Posada explained earlier in an Associated Press interview.

A poll this month showed 52 percent of Uruguayans would vote to legalize abortion if the question were put to the people, while 34 percent would vote against it. The survey of 802 people nationwide by the CIFRA consulting firm had a 3.4 percentage point margin of error.

Compromises include requiring women seeking abortions to justify their request before a panel of at least three professionals ? a gynecologist, psychologist and social worker ? and listen to advice about alternatives including adoption and support services if should she decide to keep the baby.

Then, she must wait five more days "to reflect" on the consequences before the procedure.

"It's important that the woman who decides to have an abortion attend this meeting where she will be informed, where they'll explain all the options including alternatives that she is free to choose from," Posada told the AP.

The review panel should obtain the father's point of view, but only if the woman agrees. Women under 18 must show parental consent, but they can seek approval from a judge instead if they're unwilling or unable to involve their parents in the decision.

The measure also allows entire private health care institutions, as well as individual health care providers, to decline to perform abortions.

Such requirements raised objections from Amnesty International and other groups, which say layers of bureaucracy will create barriers and delay abortions until more than 12 weeks have passed, thus forcing women and health care providers into criminal territory.

"This is not the law for which we fought for more than 25 years," complained Marta Agunin, who directs Women and Health, a non-governmental organization in Uruguay.

Also opposed are Uruguay's Catholic and evangelical institutions, which along with public hospitals provide much of the available health care in Uruguay.

A statement from Uruguay's Catholic University says it makes no sense to punish a woman for killing a fetus that is 12 weeks and 1 day old, but to decriminalize abortions before then. Conservatives also object to the removal of a proposal to require the father's consent before any abortion.

Cuba, which decriminalizes abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, is the only country in Latin America where legal abortion is common. Argentina and Colombia allow it only in cases of rape or when the mother's life is endangered. Colombia also allows it when there is proof of fetal malformation. Mexico City has legalized first-trimester abortions, but there are restrictions in most other parts of the country.

Many countries ban abortions under any conditions.

Uruguay's lawmakers have no desire to make their country a destination for women from other countries seeking abortions. The measure says only Uruguayan citizens and women who can prove at least one year's residency can apply. "This is a solution for those who live here, not that Uruguay becomes a place that attracts people from other countries for this procedure," Posada told the AP.

Opposition Deputy Javier Garcia of the center-right National Party accused lawmakers of treating living embryos as if they were "disposable," which he equated with murder.

The margin for the law was razor-thin on Tuesday after Deputy Andres Lima of the ruling Broad Front coalition said he would refuse to vote. With Posada joining the coalition, the measure appeared headed for passage by a 50-49 vote margin.

Dr. Marie Gonzalez, bioethicist at the University of the Republic, called the measure "evil" and vowed to work to persuade her fellow gynecologists to refuse to perform the procedure if it becomes law.

"The embryo-fetus is a human being, and as such has rights, like the human right to live," she said.
