Super Healthy You - A Spicy Perspective

I?d like to share something a little off-topic today? about fitness.

No, I?m not a personal trainer,? nor a nutritionist. I?m just a mid-thirties mom who cares greatly about health and feeling good in my clothes.

I am also not one of those girls with superior athletic genes and legs up to her eyeballs. I?m 5 foot 4, and have a low-average metabolism and very curvacious genes. (And sometimes jeans.)

And I love to eat.

I mean I really LOVE to eat. I?m pretty sure, more than a normal person. Ethnic food. Comfort food. Sweets. I love it all.

I do however feel like I have a lot to share about health and fitness based on years of research and personal experimentation.

If there is a health book, I?ve read it.

If there is a fitness program, I?ve ?pumped? it.

If there is a diet plan, I?ve tried it.

Always curious about the latest fitness-science update, I?ve done it all. Seriously, you probably couldn?t name one book/workout routine/diet plan my husband and I have not put to the test.

?

A very small sampling of the fitness paraphernalia we own.

Of all the programs I?ve done in the last twenty years, here are some principles that I feel are tried-and-true. Things you can count on to lose weight, stay trim and feel healthy.

Plus you can apply them to whatever diet and fitness plan you want. This is not a system. I?ve simply put together 6 principles that work.

Whenever I stray from these principles, I gain weight. Whenever I stick to them, I lose weight. Period.

Here we go?

SIX FAIL-PROOF TIPS TO GET FIT:

1. YOU MUST SET REASONABLE AND SPECIFIC GOALS. Unrealistic goals like losing 50 pounds in the next two months only leads to an eating disorder or heartbreak. Vague goals get you nowhere.

Decide what is reasonable and write out a plan to get there. Then find a way to track it. Use good ol? paper and pencil, a spread sheet or try a fitness app for tracking your progress.

Tracking creates accountability. Accountability = results.

2. EAT CLEAN 90-95% OF THE TIME and allow for splurges the other 5-10 percent. Whatever your diet:? high protein, low carb, dairy free, vegan, gluten free, grain free, whole grain, you name it. EAT CLEAN.

Clean means a whole lots of veggies, and very little (or no) processed foods.

Steer clear of white processed foods and sugar, and eat only:? lean protein, legumes, grains, fruit, low fat dairy and TONS of veggies 90-95% of the time. The other 5-10% of the time you can splurge. (You have to find the right percentage for you. Certain people can splurge a little more than others and still lose weight.)

Out of approximately 35 meals and snacks a week, somewhere between 2-4 of them can be really naughty.

Some people like to spread out their splurges. For me, it?s much easier to control myself, if I save them up for one glorious cheat day.

?

3. LEARN PORTION CONTROL. Even if you eat clean all the time, you can still overeat. You may not gain weight, but you certainly won?t lose it. We Americans are notorious for over eating. Our restaurant portions are huge, and if we happen to get served a properly sized portion, we feel like we?re getting ripped off.

A few years back I got braces on my teeth. I did not change my diet at all, yet having braces made me lose weight.

Why? Because apparently I ate too much.

I didn?t think I ate to much. I thought I watched my portion sizes. But when my teeth were sore, I ate less and I ate slower.? And low-and-behold was able to loss the weight from my second child that I couldn?t previously shed.

After a week or two of smaller portions, my appetite adjusted and they seemed normal.

Smaller portions mean smaller waste line. Click Here for tips to help with portion control.

4. WORKOUT LIKE YOU MEAN IT. Set time aside for regular workouts, and don?t pussyfoot around.

Half-way workouts get half-way results. Always.

To get REAL results, you can?t just take a casual walk or prance around on the elliptical machine for 15 minutes.

You Must Sweat.

Huff.

Grunt.

Wheeze.

Hack and Spit, if you need to.

Your face should look like a red and white panda when you?re finished.

A rule of thumb: If you feel like you are going to vomit when your workout is over, you?ve done good.

Don?t worry about looking cute; this is the time to focus on making your body do what you want it to do. I promise you will look cute later.

It?s too easy to find an ?important reason? why you can?t fit your workout in today. It?s too easy to start a hard workout and give up 10 minutes in, saying ?at least I did something.?

Always up the anti. Your mind will whine and complain, but your willpower MUST win. Drowned out the negative thoughts so you can reach your goals.

When I run, instead of allowing myself to start? thinking I?ve done enough, I always set mini goals along the way. ?I?m going to power past that big tree. Now I?m going to blow past that stop sign? and now that lamppost way up there.?

You empower yourself in major way, when you refuse to allow excuses. You change your mindset from a place of settling to a place of success.

?

5. CHANGE YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE EVERY 6-9 WEEKS. This might be the most important thing.

After a certain amount of time, our bodies? get in a rut with our workout routine. We want to continue doing the same workout, in hopes the results will magically appear again. However, your body grows accustom to your current workout program and hits a Plataeau. Meaning stagnant results.

If you are a runner, and used to see huge results but now you don?t, stop running for a while. Find another workout routine that challenges you. If you?ve been doing circuit training and no longer see results, become a runner? Or biker, or P90Xer, or weightlifter, or cross-country skier, etc.

It?s great to have options in the back of your mind. That way, the moment you stop seeing result in your current workout plan,? you can make a change and shock your body back into weight loss mode.

P.S. You can always go back to your favorites after a few cycles. Just be aware that subconsciously, they are probably your favorites because they don?t challenge you as much. Usually the workout you love-to-hate, has the biggest impact on your body. Sad, but true.

6. DRINK LOADS OF WATER and not a lot of anything else. Make it a goal to drink a gallon of water a day.

Water not only keeps you hydrated after hard workouts, it flushes your body, reducing toxins and bloating. Water also helps keep your tummy full so you don?t overeat.

Get yourself a big jug to carry around as your constant water reminder. I have one I fill up twice a day. When I have it with me, I always take in more than enough water. When I forget it, I feel dehydrated and puffy by the end of the day.

If your body tends to retain water. Try these detox waters to help flush your system.

Dandelion Tea Detox Water

Spicy Lemon Detox Water

Grapefruit Detox Water

?

?

Finally,

I?ll say it again, I don?t always do these things.

Sometimes I get lazy. I tell myself life it too hard, stressful, and fast pace to focus on my health. I tell myself I deserve a break.

Then I don?t push hard in my workouts. I make excuse and have more spurge meals than I should.? I?m not attentive to my health.

Inevitably, I gain weight and feel lethargic?making it even harder to get motivated again.

But I promise you, when I or anyone else I know, does these six things consistently, they see and feel physical change. And feeling the change is the best part of all!

Church denies it seeks to censor TomKat comments

1 hr.

Across the interwebz, the breakup of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' marriage has been fodder for all kinds of comments about the glamorous ex-couple. Some of those comments are about how Cruise's well-known involvement in the Church of Scientology may have played a role in the split.

But the church is not happy about its name being associated with the couple's marriage woes, according to one ex-member,?Mark "Marty" Rathbun. On his?blog, he shared an email he said was sent Thursday to members??from the church's Office of Special Affairs about "...?how to fight back on the internet and Stand Up For Your Religion":

I am not a big fan of media, but you may have glanced the news of?the split between TC and Holmes and all the speculations around.?While this is a personal matter, when people start to bring our?religion into the middle and a bunch of uninformed people start to?spread false datum, rumors and defame our religion it became a?matter that does affect my Dynamics and I believe that affects?yours as well.

Church members are urged to "fight back" against such abuse by complaining to media?sites that have "codes of conduct" for posted comments, and among those mentioned are Microsoft, Google "or any other?that requires users to agree to a code of conduct that prohibits comments that threaten, defame or degrade any group or individuals."

Once you got the hang of it it get pretty fast and in one hour you?can report of lots of these nonsense comment!

Rathbun writes that the idea of such a campaign is futile: "Good Luck. It is sort of like showing up to a nuclear war with a squirt gun."

The Church of Scientiology's media relations office responded to an inquiry from msnbc.com by saying Rathbun's information is "inaccurate," and that no censorship effort is underway. Any email Rathbun received did not originate with the church, even if it did come from a Scientologist, according to the spokesperson.

"An email from a Scientologist is no more from the Church of Scientology?than an email from a Catholic is from the Vatican," the church said in a statement to msnbc.com. "This did not come?from the Church or anyone associated with the Church, nor is it a?Church plan."

London calling for big Olympics

David Beckham will be missing and so, likely, will Oscar Pistorius, whose remarkable run on his magical blades came up agonizingly short. They were always going to be sideshows in London anyway, in an Olympics that hardly needs a supporting cast.

When London snatched the Olympics out of the hands of Paris a few years back, the British were pretty confident they would score well. But even organizing chief Sebastian Coe couldn't have imagined the spectacle that will play out over 17 days in London.

The Queen will be on hand, of course. So will Paul McCartney, leading some 80,000 people in a sing along to open the games this month.

The former Beatle will top an opening act that, in contrast to the sterile proceedings in Beijing, features sheep, horses and chickens, among other things. There's even a cloud that produces rain, as if London needs any more of that.

Then the real stars take the stage for what could be an Olympics unlike any other.

We've gotten a taste of it over the past few weeks as Michael Phelps dueled with Ryan Lochte in the pool, Usain Bolt for a moment found himself the second-best runner in his own country, and American gymnasts showed off the kind of depth that could potentially lead to a bunch of medals.

But there's more, much more. Always is in an Olympics, even if some of the sports are so arcane they are barely understandable.

Swimming is one we do understand, and this could be the swim meet of the century. Phelps might not win eight golds again with Lochte challenging him at almost every turn, but he will win enough to add to his 14 gold medals and stamp himself as perhaps the greatest Olympian ever.

Lochte will win his share of gold, too, but the breakout star in the pool could be 17-year-old Missy Franklin, who already has the best nickname in the sport. Missy the Missile has big hands, size 13 feet, and the kind of sprinter's speed that should make her a multiple medalist.

Just when everyone gets out of the water and takes a deep breath, track begins, and Bolt takes center stage. But the World's Fastest Man was beaten by countryman Yohan Blake in the 100 meters in Jamaica's Olympic trials and also could be challenged by Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay in a 100 that brings back hints of the 1988 final in Seoul with Carl Lewis and the soon-to-be-disgraced Ben Johnson.

In between the biggest names in tennis will duel on the grass at Wimbledon, and a U.S. basketball team headed by LeBron and Kobe will preen its way to another gold. And then there's Zara Phillips, the 31-year-old granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, carrying on a family tradition and competing in equestrian.

Yes, Beijing was grand and majestic. Everything was new and clean, even if sometimes it seemed the spectators weren't sure what they were watching.

But it can't match the flavor of these games, with tennis at Wimbledon, beach volleyball just outside the prime minister's 10 Downing Street residence, and apparently enough barnyard animals on display that you'll think you're lounging in the English countryside.

NBC says it won't make money, not surprising because the network spent $1.18 billion just for the rights for these games. But the storylines from London should prove compelling enough to draw huge primetime audiences, even in today's world where anyone with Twitter or a news app on their mobile phone will know the winner long before the network packages it up nicely and beams it into your living room.

What makes the Olympics so special isn't simply that 10,000 athletes from around the world gather together and countries like the U.S. and China duke it out for the medal count. It's that for most athletes it's their one moment of glory, a moment so fleeting that it takes all the mental fortitude they have not to choke their guts out.

We saw it at the trials, where winning was big, but scoring that ticket to London was even bigger. It's almost always accompanied by a huge feeling of relief, especially so for people like swimmer Jessica Hardy, who was kept from going to Beijing because of a failed drug test.

"I'm going to London!" Hardy exclaimed on Twitter after winning the 100 freestyle Saturday night. "Swam race of my life tonight, all heart and soul."

The vast majority can barely pay the rent and must rely on other jobs or donations to make ends meet so that someday they can tell their children or grandchildren they were an Olympian.

For them it might all come down to one vault, one hurdle to get over, or one big punch. They have no guaranteed contracts, just hope that when their chance finally comes they somehow can find a way to rise to the occasion.

Those are the kind of stories that will emerge from London, and that's what makes the Olympics so enthralling.

For thousands, London is calling. The city is ready for them, with little of the baggage incurred by other Olympic hosts.

Kiwi General Synod Vote Threatens to Split Church

Can you guess what the vote might be over? Of course you can! The New Zealand Herald has the story:

Proposals being considered by the Anglican Church could see gay marriage services carried out in churches by gay priests.

Bishops and priests are to vote on proposals covering the blessing of same-sex civil unions, the church?s response to requests to marry those couples, and ordination of gay priests.

The debate, to be heard next week at a meeting of the church?s ruling body, the General Synod, has created concern it could divide parishes in New Zealand and - if adopted - cause a schism with the international faith.

The move comes against a backdrop of acknowledgement that secret blessings are being carried out contrary to church rules, and just weeks after moves to address concerns relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members by appointing a committee to report on the issue by 2014.

Here are the motions,

GS Motions Re Same Sex Relationships

Now all of this is pretty standard fare, right? Nothing we?ve not seen in TEC or Canada etc so far. But here?s where it gets interesting. In a constitutional position that 815, Schori and Booth-Beers could only dream of achieving, Kiwi clergy are required to assent to and affirm the authority of General Synod. It is my understanding that conservative clergy, not least a large group in the diocese of Christchurch, are considering whether they will have to resign their licenses if the vote goes through.

There?s a helpful summary of the Anglican Church in New Zealand in the 2005 Churchman article ?The Nature of Ministerial?Authority in the Anglican?Church in New Zealand? [pdf] which contains the actual ?declaration of adherence and submission?. The pertinent section is this:

AND I further consent to be bound by all the regulations which may from?time to time be issued by the authority of the General Synod/te Hinota?Whanui in relation to any such office or membership so long as I hold it;

Again, this boils down to an integrity issue. For years the liberals have disregarded this vow - as the NZ Herald article makes clear:

The move comes against a backdrop of acknowledgement that secret blessings are being carried out contrary to church rules

which, of course, surprises no-one.

Do please pray for the orthodox in NZ, that God would grant them wisdom courage and grace to deal with what will come over the next week. We?ll seek to keep you updated.
