Thousands of comets orbiting new star collide every day, create visible debris ring
Comets, perhaps over 80 trillion, circle a young star that houses one alien planet and maybe more. There are thousands of daily comet collisions in the star's orbit.
A young star that is home to at least one alien planet is also ringed by a vast, dusty cloud of comets, like our own solar system. But there's a big difference: There may be as many as 83 trillion comets there, with collisions destroying thousands each day, a new study suggests.
Skip to next paragraphIn fact, there is so much dust around the star that the equivalent of 2,000 comets, each a half-mile (1 kilometer) wide, would have to have been obliterated every day to create the icy dust belt seen today, researchers say. In an announcement of the discovery, European Space Agency officials dubbed the demolition derby a "comet massacre."
The dust also could have been created by few crashes of larger comets? ? ?perhaps just two collisions every day between comets 6 miles across (10 km)? ? ?but that's still a mind-boggling statistic, they added.
"I was really surprised," study leader Bram Acke of the University of Leuven in Belgium said in a statement. "To me this was an extremely large number."
An extrasolar Kuiper belt
The crashing comets encircle the star Fomalhaut about 25 light-years from Earth. Acke and his colleagues studied the comet belt with the European Space Agency's far-infrared Herschel space observatory, which spotted the telltale dust created by the constant collisions of comets in motion, the researchers said. [Latest photos from Herschel observatory]
Depending on comets' sizes, there could be between 260 billion and 83 trillion comets in the dust belt around the star, the researchers found. If you combined the amount of material in Fomalhaut's dust belt, the mass ?would be the equivalent of 110 Earths, they added.
Fomalhaut's comet belt arrangement is similar to the Kuiper belt of icy objects beyond the orbit of Neptune in our own solar system. Scientists have known about a dust cloud surrounding Fomalhaut since the 1980s, though now the Herschel observatory has revealed the ring in greater detail than ever before.
Past observations by the Hubble Space Telescope suggested the particles that make up Fomalhaut's dust belt were fairly large. But that theory was at odds with the Herschel observatory's temperature readings of the belt.
Cosmic comet crashes
Herschel observations found that the dust belt's temperature ranges between minus 382 and minus 274 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 230 and minus 170 degrees Celsius) on average. That would correspond to tiny dust particles, each a few millionths of a meter wide, researchers explained.
The starlight from Fomalhaut would normally sweep such tiny dust particles away, yet they persist, which led Acke and his colleagues to deduce that a fresh supply of dust is coming from comet collisions.
"Since we do observe emission from dust in the disc, this blow-out effect must be compensated by a steady production of dust particles via comet collisions," co-author Carsten Dominik of the University of Amsterdam and Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen said in a statement.
One side of Fomalhaut's dust belt is warmer than the other because it is off-center, possibly due to the gravitational influence of a planet. A planet was confirmed to be orbiting the starby the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005.
Formalhaut is a relatively young star, only a few million years old, researchers said. It is about twice as massive as Earth's sun.
The Herschel space observatory is the largest and most powerful infrared space telescope in orbit today. The European Space Agency launched the infrared observatory in 2009.

Facebook flips the switch on its North Carolina data center, cooled with balmy mountain air
Since breaking ground in Western North Carolina some 16 months ago, Facebook has been running at full speed to get its newest data center online. This week, Zuckerberg & Co. flipped the switch. The new facility, located in Forest City, touts the "first major deployment" of the outfit's Open Compute Project web servers and will be the first "live test" of the OPC's outdoor air-cooling design. It tends to get pretty warm around those parts and humidity levels are a bit outside of ideal data center conditions. The Carolina facility will mirror the projected power utilization effectiveness (PUE) of FB's Oregon data center at just a smidge above 1 - somewhere between 1.06 and 1.08 to be exact. In other words, this means the ratio of power used by the structure and the actual power sent to the hardware is almost perfect with minimal energy loss. No matter, it'll still be using plenty of power. A second identical building is slated to open on the site later this year, but for now, hit the source link for a bit more info on the initial launch.

Clear Communications and Strong Relationships Strengthen the ...
This week in Jacksonville, Florida, the Wood Supply Research Institute (WSRI) held its annual meeting.? WSRI is a non-profit organization that funds research to improve efficiencies in wood supply systems in the U.S. forest products industry. Amanda Lang, Senior Consultant at Forisk and Managing Editor of Wood Bioenergy US, attended the meeting and contributed the following post:
How valuable are good working relationships in forestry?? Or, from the other side, what are measurable impacts on loggers and wood-using mills from poor communications or strained relationships?? At the WSRI annual meeting, Don Taylor with Sustainable Resource Systems LLC presented the findings of a supplier-consumer relations project. The project interviewed over 220 wood suppliers and wood consumers (procurement foresters) in the U.S. to evaluate the working relationships between the two groups. The study findings are timely and relevant as the U.S. forest products industry emerges from the recession, and as new and announced wood bioenergy projects develop their wood procurement strategies.
The study found that logging contractors reduced investments in their businesses during the recession, by closing, downsizing, or foregoing normal equipment replacement and maintenance to reduce costs. More frequent equipment break-downs resulted in lost production.
Poor relations between mill procurement personnel and logging contractors also resulted in lost production. Examples include frequent variable quotas, truck delays due to poor woodyard management, poor communications and poor planning. The study found that, on average, 7% of annual production in the U.S. is lost due to poor relationship management. In addition, some consumer-supplier relationships deteriorated as the recession hit. For example, some wood-consumers cancelled pre-recession commitments and put orders on a week-by-week basis with no firm commitment for volume or delivered pricing.? The demise of these relationships contributed to reduced investment in logging capacity.
The WSRI study highlights the importance of clear communications and relationships in the wood supply chain. Many procurement organizations are concerned about future logging capacity as wood demand returns to pre-recession levels. Strong relationships, communication, and support between procurement teams and wood suppliers will be critical as the industry moves forward.

Space shuttle Discovery makes final flight to museum
By Irene Klotz
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Apr 19, 2012 5:43pm EDT
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - The space shuttle Discovery made its final voyage on Tuesday: a piggyback jet ride to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum annex in Virginia.
The United States retired its space shuttles last year after finishing construction of the $100 billion International Space Station, a project of 15 countries, to begin work on a new generation of spaceships that can carry astronauts to destinations beyond the station's 240-mile-high (384-km-high) orbit.
Discovery, the fleet leader of NASA's three surviving shuttles, completed its last spaceflight in March 2011. It was promised to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, the nation's official repository for space artifacts.
"It's sad to see this happening," said NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, a member of Discovery's final crew. "But you look at it and you just can't help but be impressed by it. That's my hope now, that every time someone looks at that vehicle they are impressed, that they feel that this is what we can do when we challenge ourselves."
For its last ride, Discovery took off not from its seaside launch pad but atop a modified Boeing 747 carrier jet that taxied down the Kennedy Space Center's runway at dawn. The shuttle's tail was capped with an aerodynamically shaped cone and its windows were covered.
"It's a very emotional, poignant, bittersweet moment," said former astronaut Mike Mullane, a veteran of three space shuttle missions. "When it's all happening you think, ?This will never end,' but we all move on."
After a looping around the U.S. capital and delighting spectators on the National Mall, the shuttle carrier plane touched down at Washington Dulles International Airport shortly after 11 a.m. EDT.
Discovery, which first flew in August 1984, was to be transferred to the Smithsonian's nearby Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
Discovery will replace Enterprise, a prototype orbiter on display at the museum that was used for atmospheric test flights in the 1970s.
Enterprise is being transferred to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City this month.
Sisterships Endeavour and Atlantis will go on exhibit at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, and at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, respectively, later this year.
"We need to preserve our history for future generations and send these off to museums to remember what we did," said former astronaut Steven Lindsey, the commander of the last Discovery crew who now works with privately held Sierra Nevada Corp., one of several firms developing commercial space taxis for NASA and other customers.
"All the lessons learned from shuttle, we're using in the design of our spacecraft. We're updating the technologies, but the basic principles are the same. Every program builds on the previous program," Lindsey said.

Sarah Palin "Checked Out" By Secret Service Agent Caught in Scandal, Report Reveals
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is weighing in on the recent Secret Service scandal after it was revealed that one of the accused agents, David Chaney, was "checking her out" on assignment protecting then-VP candidate Palin in 2008.
That's just disturbing. Not as disturbing as the fact that Sarah Palin was once close enough to the presidency that she warranted Secret Service detail, but still. Bad taste.
Seriously, though. This is a real story.
David Chaney, one of the agents implicated in the Colombia prostitution fiasco, wrote on Facebook of Sarah Palin that he was "checking her out" while assigned to protect the vice presidential candidate during the 2008 campaign.
He posted a photo of Palin with him looking on from the background. Under the photo, he wrote: "I was really checking her out, if you know what i (sic) mean?"
Palin, on Fox News, shot back: "Well, check this out, buddy - you're fired!"
She added that the scandal is "a symptom of government run amok" and that she hopes Chaney is in the doghouse, getting in a dig at President Obama's dog-eating "scandal":
